Random: Anyone play Backgammon anymore?

my wife and I used to play every day but that was many years ago. really enjoyed the game. we watched some great matches from time to time on the island of bequia. these 2 guys would play every weekend and have as many as 20 people watching. there were playing for as much as $1,000 per game! one of the guys actually lost his diving business one Saturday afternoon!

I learned to play "Acey, Duecey" (which is a version of Backgammon very popular with sailors in
the US Navy) when I was in the service during the Korean war. Have played it for years and think it's a lot more fun and exciting than the regular game of Backgammon. Still play both versions with my sons when we get together.

Sorry guys, I can't find the picture from the US Open, may not be on this computer. Also unable to find my print-out of the pool game using a doubling cube. The link I provided to the AZ thread may give some idea of how to use it. What I had was an actual game someone was trying to market. If I can find it later, I'll resurrect the thread:D

Agreed. In my mind, its much more like poker than pool, meaning (1) there is enough luck involved that a decent player can beat a better player on any given game. (2) doesnt take years to be a good player, you just need to be able to calculate the best strategy.

Note that those 2 traits should make it much easier to get some wagering going

In the 1970's I could hold my own with most Backgammon players
in the SF Bay Area. My teacher was an Armenian WWII refugee and
Death Camp Survivor. He taught me to play in Arabic. I replaced my
3 Martini Lunches with Backgammon sessions and taught many
friends and co-workers the game. Sadly, I haven't found a decent
game in two decades.
As for a connection with Pool, I would suggest that Dominos is
more closely associated with Pool and Card Games even closer.

They play it at Steinway's in Astoria...at least the old Greeks do, they call it "Tavli". There's your pool connection...the one time I went in there, there were at least four games going.

as a Greek we love to play Backgammon in Greek Τάβλι but only with the original Wood Table and we dont play with doubling and dont play with a dice cup (but it would be better for avoiding cheating), so you have to throw your dices from outside the board into the board and hit the corner.

We also have 4 different variants and the other 3 games requires much more knowledge than the classic backgammon.
