Random Observations In Vegas

I was in Vegas for the entirety of the BCA event, although I didn't watch the later rounds of the Pro events...My team did okay, 33-48 in the open, we were hoping to do alot better! One of my players finished 7-8 in the open, he shot real well...Right away I started making a little money betting on Shane Van Boening. I had seen him shoot in Reno and know he's about as jam up as you can get on the bar box. He was playing a Spanish champion in the Masters Division and I went over and asked the Spanish enterouge for a sidebet, I wanted to bet 200 but could only get 50, Shane kills the guy 7-3....Buffet was on me! The next night Shane was matched up with some other jam up player playing 50 dollar 9ball and I was there to sidebet 25 a game on him...This time I won 250...I think Shane won 600 or so...Anyways I gave him a little jelly and was on my way...We'll get back to his action later.

One of my best buddies was playing the Pro event...Tinsley Johnson won a qualifier and drew Sandor Tot first round, not a bad draw. T never look comfortable and lost 11-6, then lost 11-8 to Max Eberle. T shot alot better against Max but couldn't quite get there. Later in the week I caught up with Max and asked him why he didn't play Chohan with his best in the west challenge, he basically said it comes down to money and that Tony only wants to play him at Hardtimes in Sac...I sure would like to see a match like that!

Speaking of Tony Chohan...He was there all week, looking for action wherever he could find it...He was trying to make a high money game with Harry Platis but they never got down, to my knowledge that is. Three of the finest Nor Cal has to offer, Chohan, his cousin Amar and Bryce Avila entered in the Grandmaster event and all three forfeited their matches! I guess staying up all night gambling and who knows what else takes its toll! I saw a funny exchange between Tony and Shane VB while they were trying to work out a game...The negotiation was going back and forth but Tony kept insisting he gets the first TWO breaks against Shane, playing alternate break format...Shane wouldn't budge and finally said pretty loudly, with his speech impaired voice sounding agitated "He's AFRAID of my break!" Tony obviously didn't like to hear that and asked Shane just how much money he had on him...Shane nonchalantly replied "about 11 thousand"!! Tony just a nonchalantly said "let's play for it". I think the settled on two thousand dollar sets, race to 20, alternate breaks. I guess they broke even, I couldn't watch the match because my team was playing and since I was the captain I thought I should probably show up! By the way, somebody once said on the forum that they would bet on Tonys stakehorse in any armwrestling match ever and I now see why! The guy is humongous! I also saw Tony C ask Jon Schmidt to play, and Jon looked annoyed to have to say no, he had to go do some show or something...But he made sure to let Tony know he'd be looking for him at a later date. Bucktooth was there, pulling wads of hundreds out of every pocket and orifice and high rolling everybody...If he couldn't high roll you he'd ask for more weight than you'd give any person ever! He was fun to watch!

My biggest disappointment for the week was the play of the female pros that I watched. With the exception of about 5 or 6 female pros, the rest are terrible! I mean awful! ANYBODY that thinks the women play anywhere near to top men is in a serious case of denial. I thought I would see some great play by some of the ladies that post here but I didn't...Most of these women "pros" would lose for the cash against the strong B players in my town...It was very dissapointing. Also, I never realized just how many of them are full on bull dyke lesbian, I was not impressed.

I'll continue this later........Marc

Fun to watch? The guy was the most annoying thing I had to put with while I was there. Hillbilly said it best... I can't quote him because I don't remember the exact words but it was something to the effect that he'd be too embarassed to ask someone to play if he had to ask for that much weight. The thing that got on my nerves was that the guy wouldn't stop. It's one thing to "woof" (if you can call him asking for the world & then some woofing) it's another thing to say the same thing over & over for over an hour.

At the risk of getting my ass kicked here, I just have to interject.

1) I can understand why a person would get upset over part of the original post, but whats that have to do with Earl? You talk about bigotry and the such. Last time I heard, Earl might be a a$$ while playing, but never heard of him as a sexist. So while you essentially label him as a bigot, what would that make you in targetting Earl.

2) Take away the personal comments from his post and some exaggerations, and the story is kind of accurate. I don't think the women pros play bad, some play exceptionally well, but if you are talking about the density of players at that level, it is nowhere near the mens side. (e.g. the top women could compete with the top men, but after the first 10 women the levels drop drastically, while the first 100 men could all give each other a run for their money). As for the B player comment, I don't know how the B players in his town play, so I can't tell.

Your comments represent your honest assessment of the play you watched, so I will not protest them, just rebut. We certainly see eye to eye that the best five or so are truly outstanding players. We also agree that the depth in women's pro pool does not match the depth in men's pro pool. Still, I don't know what your home town is or how the "B" players in your town play, but my home town is New York City. The ladies of the WPBA who are ranked between 9 and 16, a few of whom I've played, can, in my opinion, match up even with New York City's "A" players in a gambling match and break even.

I am not impressed with your terminology regarding the description of some of the women players. Your description is vulgar and unnecessary.

AGREE WITH THE NYC COMMENT BUT THE BIGOT ONLY SAW SOME OF THE MATCHES BUT THEN CONCLUDED THAT THE TOP FIVE WERE THE OUTSTANDING PLAYERS ELIMINATING MANY WHO ARE NOT RATED HIGHLY YET AS THEY HAVE INSUFFICIENT NUMBER OF TOURNAMENTS TO REACH A RANKING NEAR THE TOP. I HAVE SEEN ALL 64 FOR THE LAST 8 WPBA TOURNAMENTS AND I ASSURE ALL THAT THERE ARE MANY MORE THAN 5-6 IN THE TOP LEVEL OF TALENT. AS FAR AS EARL, IF THE BIGOT SAW HIM BASICALLY THROW HIS MATCH AGAINST MADLOCK, ONE MIGHT CONCLUDE EARL WAS NOT A WORLD CLASS PLAYER. WHILE EARL IS HIS BEST FAN, NO ONE CAN ARGUE HIS TALENT UNLESS THEY JUST SAW THAT ONE MATCH; MAYBE HE HAD A DATE THAT MATCH.

I have no need to get into this argument with anybody here, I called it like I saw it. Like I said they were random observations. I meant no offense when talking about the skill level of the female players that I saw, most of them could probably beat me, but not with the games they brought that day! Not noticing that many of the female pros are lesbian is like not noticing the elephant in the room. It doesn't make me bigoted or sexist...Had the players and fans in the mens division been filled with flaming homosexuals I would have noticed that also.
What exactly does Earl have to do with this conversation and how did he get brought into it?.............Marc

You offered your comments regarding the sexual orientation of some you saw in a way that made it crystal clear that you disapprove of it, and offered no factual substantiation for your claim. I surely spent twenty-five hours in the tournament room sweating BCA Open matches and obviously didn't see what you saw, despite you're claim that not having noticed it would have been comparable to not having noticed an elephant in the playing area.

Allow me to let you in on a little secret. The women of the WPBA are great ladies and are a credit to our sport. The real challenge our sport faces is how to get the men to behave more like the women, who, as a group, generally conduct themselves with dignity and professionalism.

At the pool halls and in the arenas of competition, women pool players are adding a lot to our sport. As men, our job is to delight in it and encourage them to keep up the good work.

At bare minimum, you are guilty of intolerance and insensitivity here.

Earl; Did You Play At Yassin's Grand Cenral Station In Houston About 25 Years Ago?

i appreciate when u gave me a little bonus after winning some money games in vegas. and just remember i never lose when the money is on the line, so always bet on the kid. because the kid is rolling right behind the pros. I had a great time this year and i love to have people watchin and bettn on the kid. I think i remember who u are but thank you and take care.

ROFL...while I agree with you that Marc wrote some things that were outta line regarding female players, I always think it's hilarious when people call someone else out for being a bigot or stereotyping - and then in the same paragraph go on to stereotype

Just my observations ...

I have played 43 years, and have seen a lot over the years.
As to the current state, IMO:

1) The top 5 women are competitive, but the rest have work to do.
2) Allison or Karen would finish about 7-12th in Open Pro men's events, other
women pros would be much further down the ladder.
3) Some of the best women players I have seen from my region are, in fact,
gay, and it seems to be the 'masculine' side that have the interest
and penchant for Pool. I think this is because of a competitive streak
in them to begin with, and a need to dominate.

How do I know this: Well, I have watched the women a lot on TV, in person,
and have played women pros. In 1971-2, I played the #1 woman pro, and she quit on me after I took her money. (the #1 rated pro after Jean Balukas quit)
I have played like the #26 rated woman pro, and I have to give her lots of weight. I play last years National BCA woman champion, and I give her the
the 7 ball and the breaks.

I think what they have done with the women's pro tour is admirable, and is
a boost for Pool. But, on the other hand, Allison makes more money than
several men pros that she could not stay up with in a gambling match. Is
that fair? Since Pool is a pretty even sport for both women and men, is that
fair? Well, yes and no. But I think the time is coming where the top 10 women pros should be required to play in a minimum of events with men pros.
That would give them a more realistic view of where their playing level is really at. Most women pros do not gamble because they simply can not adopt into
the 'hard as nails' attitude that a seasoned gambler has to have to survive
and make money. I mean, can you imagine Vivian Villareal walking up to you
and saying, "Hey shortstop, you want to play some $2,000 sets?" No, I can't
either.

These are just some of my observations and experiences I have seen and
been through. Take it for what it is worth ...

Questions:

What is a "full on bull dyke lesbian"?

What constitutes "many"?

What are the obvious differences between said bull dyke lesbian compared to a "normal lesbian" such that you didn't realize it before?

What if anything was suppose to impress you? Is the intent of someone being a full on bull dyke lesbian supposed to impress anyone?

That being said, there is no secret that there are quite a number of lesbians in the WPBA. It would be interesting to compare the percentages with other sports. I'm guessing it's about the same.

Fred

The wording I used to get my point across was terrible and I am not going to try to justify them, I should have just said lesbian. I apologize to anybody that my choice of words offended...I could have made my point in a much nicer way.

Scott Fraser? Were you in the Reno barbox this last year? If that was you I saw you shoot and you are GREAT! Marc

I remember buying you for 25 dollars at the Sands but didn't get paid in the end of that one. I remembering feeling great about stealing you for so cheap, but you didnt get there this time. Good luck to you in the future..
