i just changed tips from a hard to a soft layered tip, but now there is a rattle or buzz when i hit a ball. i have 2 shafts, 1 medium tip, 1 soft tip, when i lightly rap/tap the medium tip shaft (not with the butt installed) it sounds solid, but when i do the same with the soft it sounds totally different, also i heard this same vibration type noise while sanding tip after installation. what is going on this shaft was fine before i retipped

Are the ferrule, shaft collar, and insert (if applicable) all tight? Also, is it a solid wood shaft, or some type of LD shaft? Is there just some debris in the hole for the pin? You might try to blow it out lightly with some air.

alot of times theres a glue relief hole in the end of the ferrel and when its faced off to make sure its perfectly flat for the tip install, you will open a air bubble or some glue will break lose inside that area and cause a small rattle.

also if you have a brass insert in your shaft there could be a glue issue there as well.

just some ideas, try the tip first then go from there.

regular maple shaft from BCM, wood threads, ferrule, tip, collar, everything, seems tight. Cut off tip and try again ? i retipped the other shaft last week with same materials/tools and it is fine.

I had a similar issue recently. It turned out that the tip wasn't glued on properly, and when I pressed hard on the side of the tip, it popped off. Just a thought.

If you are sure that everything else is OK it is most likely a loose layer in the tip itself, this is not uncommon at all and it can happen with any type of layered tip. If the sound bothers you change the tip, if not play with it until it wears out or delaminates.

tip

I remember now that i heard the noise/vibration while sanding down the tip. I am going to cut the tip off, too soft anyways, first ill replace it with a cheapie tip and see if npise is gone. Also someone wrote about a glue relief hole, my shaft is visible through the top of the ferrule, like a tube, the center has 1/3 diameter hole. Is this threaded ? The shaft is sanded level with ferrule.

retip

well i cut the soft tip off, couldn't feel any looseness in the ferrule, or joint rings, sanded and glued on new ti, and rattle is still there, i am going to have to send this to beian at BCM.
