Razors

I am a big fan of cutting the tip to get flush with the ferrule using a sharp razor - anybody ever tried this same method at the joint (cutting through a phenolic collar) to make it flush?

I'm with Varney as well.
But you can use a razor blade to chamfer the edges of phenolic butt caps.
Also if you want to knock the sharp edge off of your shaft collars a little (and by a little, I mean only a few thousands worth,) the razor works well.

It can be done. But my question is why, since there are much easier ways. When I first started I cut ferrules down to size with the utility knife just like many do tips. I also butchered a friends shaft when a ferrule kicked back the blade and gouged his shaft. I then changed to wood turning chisles or knives and later moved on to metal cutting tools on a normal cross-slide. I suggest skipping the first two methods and only use the latter.
