I'm playing with a very inexpensive cue until I can afford something better. It plays well enough, but the finish is cheap and it's getting kind of dinged up (I don't know, but it seems like dings in a cue with a good finish look better than dings in a cue with a cheap finish, if that makes any sense). Anyway, I'm thinking about sanding off the cheap finish entirely and doing some kind of finish myself. As for sanding off the old finish, I would have the local cue repair guy do that for me on his lathe.
Now I don't have any skills or equipment in the way of applying clear coat finishes. But from what I've seen here on AZ there are other options that I might be able to do myself. I don't know much about these either, so I am just going to throw some words out here. Please let me know if any of these makes sense for a guy with little money, but enough work ethic to learn it and do it; natural, tongue oil, hand rubbed, satin.
Note, this is a sneaky pete with no wrap, so no problem there. Also note that I do like the clear coat feel. I have traction in my hand. Before I decide how to proceed, I would like to know if the other options would be on the slippery side. And I'm wondering if the other options provide protection of the wood against dirt and chalk build up.
Thanks
Fatz
