Reality Show Idea for Pool.........

I've got a great idea but I just don't know how to pull it off. It would be great for pool and might just generate alot of interest.

I reality show where there are about 12 teams, maybe more, from around the country. These teams are made up of average players from the local leagues. Nobody over a 5 APA rating would be allowed at the start of it. Just for an example . The rating could be a 4, 5, 6 to be decided later. Just no champions or great players to start with. These would be players built from the average league ratings.

Because this would be for the average Joe or Sue that plays every week in a pool league somewhere. Men and women.

These teams would be coached by some of the top teachers in the country. The idea is to get these players up to speed to compete against each other. Showing how hard they train. Showing their lives and what they need to go through to prepare.

The show would be more than just about the pool but what needs to be done to play well. Eating excersize and alot of training. All aspects of getting ready to compete.

I have a connection in the TV world. I don't know how strong it is but if there is a possibility to get some TV money involved that would be huge.

Stan Shuffet, Scott Lee, Randy Goetlicker, jerry Brieseth, Bret Lee and maybe even myself, just for a few that I would try to get involved with this if there is some interest to get this off the ground. Who know's. We might get 100 teams around the country. A national type of pool league. But of course it would not be possible without the TV money.

I know there is hundreds of instructors around the country that would be great candidates to teach a team. What fun this would be for any instructor anywhere. Having a chance to train and really see the results with the students competing on a nation wide show.

Each team could be from the teachers home area so the training would be easier to do. The competing would be at the same place all the time. Some studio somewhere that would be convenient for the Network. It could even be at one one the poolhalls somewhere in the country. Could be in Fargo, Minneapolis, California, Kansas City. it could be anywhere. Just need a great place to compete.

This could work if the TV money would get involved.

There could also be spinoffs on the local level for each team. like a rerality show for their training.

Other players around the country would also learn from what they are seeing done on the TV show.

We need to create interest in pool. This might help for sure.

Any thoughts on how this could wwork or would work.

Open to all ideas. Right now this is just a thought. In order to become a reality there has to be a good plan.

OK AZers. let's go to work and put on our thinking caps and share some of that knowledge that might just make this possible?

I'm all ears..Thanks ahead of time..........

Most reality shows have a "purpose" or "end game goal." Or, the goal is "much ado about nothing" -- and even that is openly inferred.

But what would be the purpose of this particular format of "reality show"? To see who the better instructor is? Or to see who has the better "teaching widget"?

I'm not sure I follow,

This is an excellent idea, I like it very much  It would take a lot of organisation and preparations, but it would obviously help pool gain the much needed popularity.

I guess the purpose would be to see which team would become the best. It would take both the quality of the teacher and the will of every player out there to win in such a competition.

I've had a very similar idea, Gene. I proposed something like this to Corey Dueul in Tunica. I was thinking of city vs. city competitions with a local pro mentoring the regular Joes and Janes.

I think you'd actually have to keep it regional in urban areas for travel concerns. Then the top individuals meet in Vegas for the finals. A side tournament could be at the same time as the finals, but comprised of the mentoring pro's.

Basically, someone like Archer puts his name on a league in the Atlanta area. He gets paid thru league dues and gives "free lessons" once a month or so to members. Corey does the same in the Tampa area. Brumback takes the Louisville area. Charlie Bryant has Houston. Earl for NYC. And so on.

If you made it "exclusive" and selected players based on reality show-type try-outs, but upon acceptance they're required to post their membership fee to get the league off the ground. I'd pay $500 to play a 6 month season, that would put me against top local players, and got me a monthly lesson with a pro.

If you get TV money involved, then the membership could be dropped. At that point, it would be try-out competitions, plus whatever wild card players that the pro's selected because they saw great teachable potential.

Now that I think about it, even if there was TV money involved, I'd still have players post a "bond" that would keep them invested in completing the season. It would be refunded after it was over.

I'm thinkin 32 players per region.

What network would show this? This would be interesting for pool fans, but the average viewer would be bored.

Ask yourself, would you watch the exact same concept if it was bowling instead? I wouldn't...

It would be about the players lives and getting as good as they could quickly/

It could be the teams competing for period of time but the story line is their lives and what they are going through to try and get better and still do their jobs, take care of the family. Things that everyone has to deal with in this pool world.

The teachers would mostly be from that local area so it is easy to work with the players.

The teachers would add something of a mystic to it. Some are considered the top teachers in the country. Got some huge credibility.

It would be about the pressure put on everyday people and players to perform.

The instructors involved would have to unselfishly commit allot of time and energy. i think that most instructors would jump at a chance to be a part of something like this that might just give a little jump start to pool.

Sure the instructor that had the most winning team would look pretty good but that is not what this would be all about.

It could end with a great competition at the end. The top dozen teams or so or maybe even all of them.

Just ideas. Nothing concrete right now. Just thoughts.

..

I like the idea of using a local pro. can be used to bridge the gap between the leagues and the pro players, and add a little reality touch to it, kinda like what ufc does with the ultimate fighter series. as far as prizes... cash always sounds enticing.

That's where the TV money comes from.......

it's all about the average player taking this game to a level that so many of us achieved already. And in a short period of time. Showing the players all over the world how to get to these levels.

The players themselves sharing their thoughts with the TV audiences. The transformation from being a casual player to the point of being swallowed up by a game that is so easy to love once a certain level is reached.

We'd see the same sacrifices that so many of us have made in our lives to get to these levels to compete.

I'm sure any TV director could make a pretty good story line from so many players. Alot of interesting people and players in these leagues around the world and nice people.

Not to say the player working out to get the body in better shape to perform better. A real life changer.

So many different angles to work with to create interest.

The ideas could be endless and there is an audience out there.

Plus it just could give pool a shot in the arm. Some more poolhalls opening and more staying opened.

Create more interest.

It would be fun to see........

I really do think this could get interesting, with the different playing styles and approaches to the game that the pros have, from Mika's emphasis on staying in shape, Earl's emphasis on the bridge hand/spin/touch, Corey's ingenuity... and that's just me winging it. There are definitely lots of possibilities.

Weekly losers die on TV?

I am NOT in.

The subtle differences would never show up, at least not in any meaningful way.

Those differences are secondary to skill and nobody outside of the top pros possess the base skills that are necessary to illustrate those differences.

Mika would never tell a c/d level player to go jogging instead of practice pool.

Gene, I actually think the show should be a documentary or reality based show about a cross country road trip with players gambling at different stops, maybe a group of players traveling and gambling together. I think the drama and allure of pool action across the country would be very appealing to regular viewers. Hell they're willing to watch people live in a house together for weeks, at least the scenery would change from time to time. Even what you're trying to do, turn a kid into a champion, in a couple of months would make for an intriguing project. The filming could be done pretty cheaply. Do you have room in the van for a film crew too? :)
Better yet, 2 men with a camera, a van and the road....-Couldn't resist :)

I think Jay Helfert had a similar idea. Someone with clout would probably need to arrange the games and provide some side drama each stop. I do think this could generate some real interest from the outside world.....
Those are my pitches-Ryan

I think the idea has potential. Something like the "Sing Off" or the "X- Factor" But I have to admit I don't watch either of those shows regularly. If a show like this did come off somehow, it would be great if you could run the finals or more accurately, the Season Finale, side by side with something like the US Open, or the Mosconi Cup, or even US Amateur Open or a large league National Tournament like the BCA or The APA. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have their money on board

Just go halfway between Minneapolis and KC and do it in Des Moines at Big Dogs :). I am in if you allow a shtty 7 to participate. I add that italian flair to the camera.

How about having a professional coach three celebrities and another pro coach three other celebrities, then having then match up? That'd generate some interest, I think.

Just had someone contact me from California in the film industry.

All we need is for the right person to get ahold of this and it's up up and away like superman.

The right way to do this is have a big motorhome bus. That way everyone is there all the time.

The cameras would entice action all over the place. Zach and myself would have so much action we wouldn't know what to do with it all.

I guess we would know what to do with the action. Win win win........

Ten legit apa 5s on one team and ten 5s on the other. Whoever doesn't get better faster gets voted off from there team naturally. The last two or three on each team faces the other three for big bucks.
