I've often dreamt of a lathe with a really long bed that has the chuck in the center. Then you could have 2 tailstocks. One to the left and one to the right.
You know when I started building cues with a metal lathe I had the same dream. So when I designed the Cue Smith lathes I put the headstock kind of in the middle of a 6 foot bed. I have built lathes as long as 92 inches. On a side note I saw a picture of one of Bert Shrager's lathes that had a tailstock mounted behind his headstock.
I have used the tailstock behind the headstock, but once when tapping a weight bolt I had the tap pull the cue forward out of the tailstock center. So I went back to the steady rest system behind the headstock.
I feel an extended bed and steady rest is the way to go.

I am trying again I think I got it now. The back chuck is an old one made in england but it is very true. The front is a six jaw.
