Recommend a cue, around $250.

Looking at picking up another wrapless cue, around $250 or so, can be a little more. I've been looking at a Joss SP, but I know there are tons of different ones out there.

I'm mostly looking for the best build quality (fit/finish) and playability for the money, looks don't really matter much.

yo man if you're leaning toward production you should really go with mezz with a predator shaft. it's what i played with for like 3 years. played great and the finish has really held up.

Do a search in the Wanted/Sale section. There have been a few people selling Predator SP's in that price range. Hard to get a custom in that budget. Bump it up a bit and you could get a nice, simple plain jane custom cue. Check out ebay also. Some really nice Frey, Phillipi, and yes a Varney (he posts on this board) have sold for that amount.

thanks!!

Shurtz entry custom cue is $250, and comes in one of 4 woods and choice of stains with Irish Linen wrap, or wrapless if you prefer. Bob Owen, partner and cuemaker, usually has some in stock.

phone is 316-269-3844, and he is usually there from 1-6 on Sunday afternoons, as well as weekdays and Saturdays.

Email is Bob@Shurtzcue.com

Thanks for the info!! I NEVER knew how much these cues were, but now I do. I emailed them for specs on em' myself...I may even buy one for myself. They're a good value for the money I think. rep points for you for the info sir!!

well, I've talked to Bob and may have one coming soon. I'm just waiting on a reply from him. This cue isn't finished yet, he has to put a wrap on it but I get to pick it! :D anyone ever play with a SHURTZ cue? what are they like?

Well, if you can squeeze a bit more out, I would recommend one of these:
http://www.new2youqs.com/cues/josey.html

Scroll down the page, and look at the rosewood one. This is pretty rare coming out of Keith's shop...he does relatively few in ebony and rosewood.

Here's what I can tell you: Simply amazing playing cues!!! Fit and finish is absolutely top-notch...the same as his high-end stuff. AS to looks, people just like these, ALOT!. They do tend to hold their value pretty well...but I doubt you would want to part with it anytime soon. Everyone who has gotten one has been quite pleasantly surprised at how well these cues play. Superb feedback....very solid feeling, like a one piece (seriously). The are a finger-spliced full splice cue, not a blank, and are naturally weighted...no weight bolt. The shafts are of some of the best quality I have ever seen...and are stiff! Very little in the way of deflection. My game stepped up almost immediately. I feel completely confident in recommending one of these cues!

thanks Bob

I JUST got off the phone with Bob. I got it coming as soon as tomorrow by UPS. I'll post pics as soon as I get it...I think its a beauty!

You believe he should "really go' with a mezz and pred shaft
correct? Interesting combo, out of curiosity, what other cues have you owned/used?

I've been using Linds Cue now, a production one, hand made and made to hit solid, i'm very satisfied with it, you can get a plain jane custom one just add a some more on your budget(without the shipping cost).

top notch i'd say (finish and fit), i'd think twice buying other cues but not Linds. quality no doubt.

you might me interested, here's his website http://www.lindscues.com.ph/ you can also contact him thru this website.

Yep. Got one for X-mas.....tell him to put on a Moori tip (for an xtra $30). You won't regret it. The cue looks and plays great! I plan to buy one every year at X-mas (if the wife cooperates with my plan).

Just picked up a Diveney w/ butterfly veneers off of the Wanted/For Sale section. :D

How'd I do?

I see a Josey in the future though, those SPs with the flare-tip inlays look very nice.

They're very stiff, definately not for everyone. Give it time.

Bob let me hit a few at the Derby. You won't be disappointed. You probably know by now how pleasant and easy going Bob is.

Personally I think his cues are under priced. If he charged more there would probably be a 5 year waiting list because of perceived value.

Enjoy your new cue.

I've had 2 and I play with one now. I directly compared my $1,100 Shurtz with a $2,800-$3,200 Southwest that a friend of mine has (Gumby), and I could only detect the slightest of variances between the 2. The difference in the hit was negligible (tips might have made just a slight difference - I hd Hercules tip, Gumby had a Moori), but I liked my cue on the balance better than Gumby's Southwest, which is a personal preference thing. Mine was a little more forward balanced than his. The differences though were slight, like I said, and I could probably pick either up with eyes closed and play fine.

I would say that 95% of the 'Players' (money players, regional players, A players and above) play with a Shurtz. They aren't known on the coasts very much, but the Midwest has plenty of players with them. John Gabriel, housepro at Magoos in Tulsa, has one.

95 percent? No offense but I find it hard to beleive that such an overwelming number of the good players use the same cue...
