Recommend Instructor in Philly Area?

Hi, newbee here, I've been a casual player on and off, (sometimes long time off) for 30 years. for the last two years i have played in local 9 ball tournements one or two times a week, but I don't feel that I am ever improving. Sure I'll win an ocassional tournement, but I'm getting a substantial handicap from the good players. I know that one of my problems is that I don't practice enough. I am looking for recommendations for a qualified BCA instructor in the Philly, South Jersey area that I can spend a few hours with to look over my stroke and help me improve.

Thanks

Gus,

I would say go to Petey Fusco's room in Feasterville and look up Karen Corr for lessons. There really aren't any BCA instructors in this area. But if you're really set on a BCA instructor, go to New York City and look up Fran Crimi at Corner Billiards in Manhatten. She actually solved a problem for me sight unseen!

Good luck!

Barbara

well he's not BCA certified that i know of, but tony robles gives lessons out of amsterdam billiards in manhattan. he's very good.

OK, thanks for the Karen Corr suggestion. I've been to Petey's place years ago, I'll stop in & see her. Any other suggestions? The instructor doesn't have to be PCA certified, just a good teacher. I wouldn't want to travel to NY for lessons, ther must be a few good instuctors in the Philly, South Jersey area. Think!

Thanks again.

Jimmy Fusco

Jimmy is a great teacher and more reasonable than the others mentioned. His number is 215-467-0655.

Just to add another choice to your list, Jose Garcia comes to mind. I'm not sure if he's still giving lessons, but I know of several aspiring players taking instruction from him. I saw him compete two Opens ago, and he's got one sweet stroke. :)

He owns a pool room in Jersey, but I don't know the contact info.

Maybe someone on this forum will know!

Hey Barbara,

Karen Corr and Julie Kelly are BCA Master instructors. They both went to the master school in Texas last year and are certified BCA Masters. Karen and Julie give fantastic instruction. Clank on tis link to fill out request form

Wow Grem, I didn't know that they became Master Instructors! That was pretty damn quick for them to get "Master".

How about Allen Hopkins in Port Republic, New Jersey?

Yikes!! It would be better to take a lesson from his wife, Dawn. She's the ont that corrected my stroke after 6 years of bad form.

Yes it's true that Karen & Julie graduated BCA Instructor Certification Classes at CUE-TECH in Dallas Texas. Although they are at the top of their games, they have not yet reached Master Instructor level. Some day very soon I expect them both to be there.

I personally feel that both of the ladies are fine instructors and that taking their school course would improve anyone's game. Give them a chance to show what they can for you....randyg

I took a couple of lessons from Karen Corr earlier this year...excellent excellent excellent. And that isn't saying enough!

While I'm sure they are both excellent insturctors, neither of them is a Master instructor. The BCA has four levels of instructor going from Recognized to Certified to Advanced to Master, and instructors new to the program begin at "Recognized" after a three-day training program and then can advance to "Certified" after about two years of teaching.

C'mon Bob

Your post presupposes that the BCA instructors are the best. I don't believe that. There are some BCA teachers who are not very good, no matter their certification.
Jimmy Fusco has one of the great minds in pool and knows how to impart knowledge. His rates are very, very reasonable. He not only has been to the "school of hard knocks", he has a second place finish in the World 14.1 Championship, holds a number of major 9 Ball titles and has been the best player in Philadelphia for years. Pretty fair bona fides if you ask me!!!
As far as this discussion goes I'm not a certified instructor. I do not claim to be a great teacher but I think I'd stack up pretty well against BCA instructors or Karen or Alison.
Lastly, to the person seeking a good teacher in Philly you couldn't do better than Jimmy.

WOW! Thank you ALL for the suggestions. Grady, I have played with Jimmy a few times in local tournaments, and couldn't agree with you more. I will probably get in touch with Jimmy or Karen & see who's available.
Thanks again everone for your input. I'll report back on my quest.

Well, I think that nothing I said claims that. I did point out that the BCA instructor training program has a structure and set of requirements. Whether a particular instructor trainee actually picks up the material that's presented and uses it in an effective manner depends on both the trainee and the trainer. I have seen some BCA instructors that I would not recommend, but I've also seen non-BCA instructors that I would not recommend.

As for Jimmy Fusco, so far as I have heard, he is the most highly recommended one pocket instructor in the country.
