Reducing the shaft question?

I was researching the forum about reducing shaft's.I am taking mine to a cue smith next week but just wanted to know if you have to cut down or reduce the tenon and put on a thicker ferrule so the old one doesn't crack from being reduced(the ferrule)? I didn't know how thick a ferrule really is and how thin it becomes after a reduction.By the way the shaft is an Joss shaft.Should I ask him to put a new one on or should the old one be ok?

The tenon is about 5/16 thick ( or .280 to .3125 ).
A 13 MM ferrule is about .512" thick or about .100 each side of wall .
Take about .020 off that wall ( each side ) per mm reduced.
I suggest do not go smaller than 12MM.

Not being a smart butt here but, you trust this cuesmith to work on your shaft, but you don't trust him to know what's best to complete the job properly? Just curious. Maybe you're just looking for a second opinion.

Thank you for your help! Cuedog you're 100% right,but the old cue smith is gone that I know personally and The new one doesn't have a good or bad reputation yet.He doesn't do work on the butt end,so I sent that to Rat Cues(Mueller's)to have done(new wrap).I read the forum's about guy's doing there own reduction and kinda wanted to know for myself about the ferrule becoming thinner as it was never mentioned.It is a Joss Shaft which is 13.00/13.25mm and I am having it reduced to 12.50mm.I have nothing but respect for cue smith's and cue maker's,it is a beautiful art!I was really just trying to learn a few secret's.

reduction

Going from 13.25mm to 12.5mm is easily accomplished with the original Joss ferrule. Going to 11mm or 11.5mm would be a different question. The side walls would be getting too thin and would probably begin cracking relatively soon after the reduction. I would stand by my reduction to 12.5mm with free replacement if it cracks in a year. If it hasn't by then it won't most likely.

You might want to try a 12.75 first. Sometimes a small reduction is much more than you think and you can always take off more later if you need to.
 
I have been playing with a older Predator sneaky pete(with the green veneer's) and it has the 314 1st gen. shaft.I talked to the local cue repairmen and he is gonna gauge the Pred. shaft and make the Joss shaft the same mm.I have had the cue(Predator SP) for so long I don't remember if it was 12.50mm or 12.75mm.The cuesmith told me the same thing about not taking off to much,you can't add it back! Thank's...Ron
