Refinish job

Is there a better way to get a sharpe edge from the forearm to the handle (wrap area) than just building up tape ? i used the 3m green tape and it kinda left a jagged edge and some lifting on the lip (pulled tape loose after about 20 min ). it was my first finish job and im doing another and looking for a better way if there is one or is it just something you gotta learn from practice ?

Hi Carl; it sounds like you sanded & refinished the forearm, but not the handle. Is that right?...JER

Use electricians tape (black plastic - not cloth) and stretch it as you mask the area off. There is also a product called Parafilm which really stretches and allows no bleed under and is not adhesive - it sort of acts like kitchen cling wrap. Micro Mark small tools has it and you might be able to Google it as well.

OOOPS! I understood the question to be with a wrap in place. My bad. With no wrap in place see what Ryan said in #6 below.

The entire cue should be sprayed at the same time. IF you use masking tape, for what ever reason, you have to remove it as soon as you are done spraying. Otherwise you run the risk of some of the edges being raged, as you peal it off...JER

I tape off the undercut with masking tape and then peel the tape off after the finish cures for 20 minutes or so like the OP stated. When all of the finish is applied, you still need to go back and clean up the undercut by a single point face. You cannot expect to leave a clean edge with tape.

Also, if your finish is lifting or cracking, maybe the problem is your finish. It could be too hard or curing too quickly causing it to be brittle. Lifting may also occur because you sanded the area too smooth and the finish is not getting a good bite into the cue itself.

I understand it as the cue has a wrap and he is trying to get a clean face to the undercut. I do not use any clear finish on the wrap/handle if the cue is going to be wrapped.
