Remember when pool was fun?

So I found my old vcr and my tapes of the world pool championship 2004, which was televised in my region and I've enjoyed watching the tapes immensly. The commentary was pretty decent, with among others Steve Davis. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed watching pool quite as much as I have rewatching these old videos. The tables were Brunswick Metro and they had large pockets. Balls were flying in on the break and the players were stringing racks, going for combinations, jumps etc..It seemed every match had major swings,yet people sometimes missed. You don't see pool like that anymore. The tight tables have people coming up dry and playing much more defensively, not to speak of S L O W L Y. The only one guilty of that in the 2004 tapes was Johnny Archer (who was at his very worst in this department).
With the tables going towards smaller and smaller pockets (when will they ever be small enough for you guys?) there is a chance pool like that will never be seen again. I find myself missing the tables I learned pool on, with large pockets and soft cushions...how fun was pool on those! You could bank, kick, shoot combinations, heck if you had a table length draw shot along the cushion you could let it rip with little fear as long as you hit it decently...Even half decent players would sometimes string racks, and nobody was ever robbed by nonsensical shit like shims at the wrong angle etc..Oh, well you American one pocket guys win, I guess..:frown:
I agree. Pool is BORING to watch now. There is no excitement. It is make a ball or two...hide...make a ball or two...hide...win....rig the rack...break...make a ball or two...hide...etc...etc...
