Remove Finish from Cue?

I have some old house cues Im converting to sneaky petes and I was wondering what the best way to remove the finish is so that I can re-finish them. I have some butts that are large enough to make a quick pass with the router with no problems. But it seems the butts that look the best are already pretty small and didn't want to take off any more material. Ideas?

Richard

There is this thing called sandpaper.
You might wanna check em out.
:D
I won't recommend razor blades to you yet.

I'm a little curious on how to remove finish with a blade too:confused:

It takes machining understanding, common sense and skill.
Spin the cue towards you, hold the blade well, let the blade skive the finish.

please tell me this is an inside joke or something? really?

No inside joke thats just how its done with a razor blade.. Besides I think that people are getting tired of anwsering these very basic questions before he even tries something for himself. Begaining cue building is the time you try thing for your self for the learning experiance. If you dont mess some things up you'll never learn anything.. Like I told him in a pm he needs to buy Chris Hightowers book do some reading. Then buy some junk wood and start messing some stuff up. None of us got any good at building cues just by asking questions. We all have a lot of time and money in the shop destroying lumber so we could learn what works and what dos'ent..

wasnt reffering to the razor blade....more like towards the original question

Depending how thick the finish is, I like to hit it with a steel file. Otherwise you may be going through a ton of time and a ton of sand paper. Not too much preasure or you will leave a few interesting scratches. Once you start to break through follow up with paper. Stop the lathe between grits and sand lengthwise to cover your tracks.

I'll have to try the razor approach. I have some firewood laying around.

Im not sure exactly who some people are referring to but I try everything for myself. I have Hightowers Book and all his DVD's (Hightower uses a different method of stripping the finish with a razor blade than Joey does which is exactly my point of asking this apparently stupid question I asked about removing finishes), I also had Barringers DVD's, and Dieckmans VHS tapes. Ive sanded down butts, Ive run a router down them, Ive even used paint stripper and Ive tried other methods that definitely didnt end well. I ask questions because on top of all the methods I have done others have their own methods, some might work better, others might not. Everyone is free to share there opinions, this is a forum. If they dont want to, so be it. I've had many help me out and I appreciate it very much. People have flooded me with ideas and methods, I try them all. Either way I have to learn it for myself, but different opinions are nice to hear. I will figure it out, and if it works for me, it does, if it doesnt Ill try something else. Some people in this forum are comical (keeps me amused), some helpful, others say alot but dont really say anything at all and others treat you like a close friend. This is a site full of experience and knowledge. I ask my questions because I love working with cues. It separates me from the world. If you have nothing useful to say, why say it at all?

You will have to take doctor off of that list. That phase of destroying flesh is called internship. It is what you get if you have lousy insurance or no insurance at all.

thank's JoeyinCali,
Kind of self explanitory.....think I'll experiment tomorrow, just to see what the fuss is about........sandpaper works good for me, without the risk of a nice rotating slice mark down the butt :D

Richard,
All the guys here are really trying to help you! Yes, we kid and test a new guy to see if he's a dummy , but Joey helps everyone, Tony too, and a host of others. Don't get discouraged. You'll get good and useful info here and maybe a couple of laughs in the bargain. Of course there will always be a person that wants to make you look foolish. Don't be thin skinned and just ignore it or you'll end up in a forum War....nobody is here for that.
Good Luck, and try the razor blade on one and sand paper on another and see how you make out. Let me know, I"m interested.

Thanks Joey, Ive got a bunch of junk butts to play with. Ill make sure I keep the 1st aid kit close by.

Richard

TAPE one half of the blade . Hold on to that tape .
Do not gouge with the blade . Imagine you are just scratching the finish.
I hate those dipped UV finish on house cues.
