Removing a Finish on a sneaky Pete

I currently have a "not so sneaky" Sneaky pete similar to this one :

I don't like the fact that the shaft has a finish on it, and would much rather prefer it to be more like the shaft on my J&J jump break I have(Feels like it was finished, then had the finish sanded down a bit).

How would I go about doing something like this, and would it be worth it for a cue a barely spent 100 on ?

I don't have any expert advise for you on this issue but I'm sure someone over at the "Ask a Cuemaker" forum could help.
 
i wouldnt really recomend doing it manually without a lathe as you could create high and low spots. but its generally done with sand paper. i wouldn't imagine this running more than $20 or so, and wouldnt hurt the pocket that much if you have someone locally that does good work. if you had to figure in shipping out and return shipping that could easily add on anouther $30, i don't see it being worth the hasle for a $100 cue. be easier just to buy one of them lucasi's.
 
i have a lucasi....the finish is not sanded down....thats why i was considering it.
 
i know what you mean by these finishes on shafts. sometimes they can be hard to remove because they are thick layer of lacquer. you may have to remove quite a bit before getting close to the wood. most of the time a light sanding with 600 grit will do it. don't use lower grits, you can get in trouble and go lightly. i think it's ok to do it by hand as long as your are careful and keep turning the shaft with one hand. another trick that sometimes works is to use a magic eraser. the eraser will damage most finishes, so it is actually great to do it on shafts where you want to do exactly that, hehe
 
I don't like Finnish on my cue either. I mostly just punch those drooling bastards away or throw a vodka bottle in the corner to catch their attention. It's like throwing a sugarcube on an anthill...

If you sand the lacquer off, remember to have some protection over your mouth/nose. I think that stuff inhaled is not good for you.
