Removing finish from bottom of shaft

Hi all,
I recently picked up a couple of new cues and I'm looking for a safe and easy way to remove the 6 inches or so of finish that covers the botton of the shafts near the joint. I play with a long bridge and finish gets stuck in my bridge hand and can sometimes cause friction burns.

I know a cue lathe would probably be the way to go but I don't have access to one or know anyone here that does.

Also one more question for the cuemakers out there, what is the purpose of adding finish to the bottom of shafts?

You can sand off the finish if you like.
Having finish over the joint ring makes it look pretty.
Also gives a smooth transition from finished butt to unfinished shaft wood
 
It also protect the part of the shaft that you normally grasp when taking the cue apart. Without the finish it would get very dirty very quick.

I'm a little weary of sanding the shaft by hand but I'll give it a shot.
23" stroke, lol! I think my bridge may be about that long but my backswing is only half that, kind of like what Alex does. On some power shots though, I do pull it all the way back and that's when the finish hits my hand.
 
I went out and measured and I was wrong, I only bridge about 15" from the cue ball... 2 feet is pretty far on a pool table.
 
If you want it to slide through you hands, you can always ruff up the finish with a scotch bright pad. The finish can always be sprayed back up and will still help to protect the shaft from getting dirty.
