removing tips...

I wanted to know if any of you have to remove the tip on partial shafts, in order to finish the shaft with matched rings. I spoke to one cue maker and they said that whatever tip comes with the shaft has to be removed because the have to put it on the lathe to turn it, but it can't be done with the tip that's on the shaft. So say you send a cue maker/builder an I-2 or X shaft. Those shafts come with a moori and a sniper. What do you do?

Find a cuemaker with a bit more imagination..... they can easily be finished off without removing the tip.

I agree with Sheldon, I only remove the tip when
one, it is a bad tip, yes I check it, and
Two, customers preference.

I dunno why he can't just chuck up on the ferrule ( with a collet ) , joint end thru the steady rest then tap the hole.

My lathes have 2 chucks on the headstock. One on the front & one on the back. Just chuck it up, center it, put the collars on, cut the diameter to size, drill & tap. Then you sand & spray the finish on & sand to match the butt. I usually cut the joint end about .020 undersized, to allow for the finish...JER

Yep same here, I could do It out of the jaws or a steady rest without popping the tip off.

The only time a tip needs to be removed when finishing a partial shaft is when you want a different taper put on the shaft.

Talk to a different cuemaker. There is no reason to remove the tip (unless you want to change it).
