It might be that it's a 100 dollar tournament . It takes a full week to complete. If you aren't in the top 12, you lose money for the trip.

Top Players ????????????????

I just checked the board and see that David Matlock & Buddy Hall are playing today.
Who you lookin for?
AND WHAT DO YOU CALL A TOP PLAYER?
You do know that Wimpy & Cornbread are dead, Right?

TY & GL

Efren Reyes, Parica, Strickland, Immoman and the rest of the Europeans, Archer.

I can't beat them but Matlock and Hall aren't exactly top tier players anymore from what I see. I apologize if I'm wrong.

I went to the Reno Open in 1990 and saw all the big name players. I just looked through the brackets and hardly recognized anyone. A joss tour event draws a tougher field.

Efren Reyes
Corey Deuel
Francisco Bustamante
Alex Pagulayan

the top four money earners this year aren't there.

Aside from the two that OHB mentioned.....

Shawn Putnam - ranked #1 on the current yr to date calender - UPA tour

Mike Davis - ranked #4 on the current yr to date calender - UPA tour

Jeremy Jones - ranked #5 on the current yr to date calender - UPA tour, former US Open champion

Gabe Owen - ranked #9 on the current yr to date calender - UPA tour, Current US open champion

Danny Basavich - ranked #12 on the current yr to date calender - UPA tour

(I'm not looking up anymore rankings...)

Santos Sambajon Jr.
Ronnie Wiseman
Dave Hemmah
Jose Parica
Luc Salvas
Tony Chohan
Jamie Baraks
Chris Szuter

And there's a few more to add to the list but you get the point.....

The number of "top players" looks smaller due to the number of total players. They had 90 something byes. $100 and you get the chance to play top players. "Anyone" can enter a UPA event but it's going to cost them alot more than $100. Not to mention the rooms are cheap too. The top finishing female gets a $500 bonus. If I were still playing pool, for that entry fee I'd play too! It's cheap enough to play for shits & giggles and be able to test your skills against top players. $12,000.00 for 1st place.... It's not a UPA points event and most of the players were just in Vegas for the BCA event so there's going to be less "top players" than you would normally see at a large tournament. Don't let the numbers fool you... there's a ton of great players there.

Corey & Archer will be at a charity event in Atlanta this weekend. Some of the others are probably taking a break as they had less than a week to go from the BCA invitational in Vegas to the UPA event in Jacksonville, FL.....

I would be honored to compete in a venue with Buddy Hall in it. Matlock is the best bar-box player in the world. He is a top-tier player, he just isn't a touring pro so you don't hear much about him.

You are right in a sense, I heard the Reno tournaments were always PACKED with the world's best players, it was a favorite for many of them. I wonder what happened? Yes top players still play in it, but it's only a handful.

maybe none of them play because they don't have the confidence they can win: whereas the wanttobe's just love the challenge...maybe the pros should play in it because it is the Reno Open...versus not play because it doesn't have the most $$$ in it? where is the heart at?

Thanks for the good replies. And I am certain there are great players there whose names I don't recognize yet. Yet. I just thought the Reno Open was one of the top tournaments for the pros.

Other than the US Open what are the big tournaments in pool now?

Hey, efirkey_I wasn't arguing with your question or opinion. That is what this forum is all about. I know I've learned a lot here and I hope you do also.

I have never seen the guy play but have heard that guy is phenomenal on the box. I just wonder, is he the best bar box specialist player? Or is he the honest to god best player on the box, aka you would take him over Efren in a long ahead set? I watched Larry Nevel shooting on the box and just killing Scott Frost and other pretty awesome players for good cash with ease. He is a known as a bar box specialist and one of the best. Nevertheless if Efren suddenly walked in the door and said he wanted to play a 13 ahead set for 20 grand I would have been putting my money on Efren and I wonder if the top bar box players are really better then a guy who is not really considered a specialist and instead just considered the best pool player period.

In a long ahead set or any long match Efren would be the favorite against Matlock, but I only say Matlock is the best bar box player because Efren doesn't really play on those tables. People say that on a bar box you take any strong player and multiply his game times two. People who can run two and three packs on a 9 footer can run fives and sixes on a bar box. I've heard of people playing long sets on bar boxes like a race to 11 or 13 and breaking and running the entire set out. If Efren played on those tables he would be a monster.

Dave "The Maverick" Matlock is the real deal, and he has his own set of magic tricks on a bar box and would give The Magician a run for his money.

Scott Frost is a phenomenal one-pocket player. Even with his high level of play and no fear, I would have picked Larry Nevel on that match-up, knowing Larry has some expertise on the 7-footers.

Efren Reyes can play all games, just like the others mentioned in the post. I never understood how some players are more proficient on the smaller table.

One of the best 7-foot table exhibitions I've ever seen was when a known bar-box mechanic ran a rack within seconds. You know the sound of the balls as they're rolling underneath a ball-return pool table? The whole run-out was that sound. Before one ball stopped rolling, there was another one right behind it. It was pretty awesome!

I've been told that Jesse Bowman is probably the BEST bar-box player currently, but I've only seen him play one time.

What did you mean by that?
I hope it wasn't referring to Mark Wilson because I already weigh 300 lbs and would need sooo much weight from him that I wouldn't be able to get out of the chair.

Ps. - I already have my room res at the DCC for '06 - How about you?

I'm going back a few years, but Keith was considered one of the best Bar Table players in the country, and they didn't like it much on the big tables either. So. Calif. was full of Mexican champions and he gave them all weight and won every time I sweated it. Anybody else out there remember the original Hard Times in Costa Mesa? St. Louie Louie was supposed to be one of the best and got robbed. John Henderson
