Rep Etiquette

So I know not everyone cares about Rep points, unless you are in the red, but I just wondered if there is any standard rep etiquette on here. For instance, I give rep from time to time when I like what someone posts, whether it be funny, instructional, or a generous gesture. If someone gives me Rep I read it and go on my way throughout the forum.

Today though, someone I had given rep to sent me a private message saying thank you. Not a bad thing at all, but since I had never done it and never had gotten it before, it got me wondering if anyone does that. Which made me start wondering if there were any other things people give rep for such as rep to everyone who replies to their post?

If a post makes me laugh out loud, they automatically get green repped. If someone shares a good piece of info, or makes a great point, or stands up to a troll, they get green. There are no set standards. Hand it out as you see fit!

If I like a post, sometimes I include in my reply that a rep is coming. As for etiquette, I think the system itself regulates it. One cannot rep the same person too often. Thus the system encourages sending rep many different members. I have not figured out the part that pops up and says maybe I will be lucky enough to get rep in return. Like you experienced, I would send a PM saying thank you before I would rep somebody just because they repped me.

I don't use PM's, I use the rep system to send someone a positive or negative message. If someone makes me laugh, is helpful, or makes a very good point in a controversial thread, I'll usually make a post in the thread saying as much. I also follow up with a positive rep to reinforce what I've already said my thoughts were on the post.

I also give negative rep the same as I give positive. I don't pass it out like candy but if I find someone to be offensive or overtly annoying, esp on purpose, I'll say so in the thread and will follow up with negative rep.

I've seen people (adults) get bent out of shape because someone left them a negative rep. I've also seen many people say they've never left it or have only left one or two. My favorite was someone who said that they don't mind getting a negative rep because it lets them know who isn't a decent person. LMAO, even though I try to be helpful, and am an honest and law abiding, this person seems to think that I'm of little character because I dare to leave a (worthless) negative rep.

People obviously take it too seriously. Its simply a message stating your approval or disapproval for only that person to see. Since it has no bearing on real life or even forum life (unless you're in the red), there is no need for an "etiquette". Use it as you see fit, or you can not use it all. It is completely up to you but whatever you do, don't take it so seriously.

I'll trade you all my rep points for your Jeff Olney cue :grin:!!!

I'll even toss in the vCash!!!

That's a pretty tempting offer, add 1,000 posts and 1/2 of you iTraders and you got a deal!

As of late, i have been remiss in giving out rep points...I often just do not think about it. Occasionally I will PM someone who has repped me, but not always. As to red rep...in all the years I have been here, I think I have only used this feature twice...and always only as a last resort. Typically is it because someone has been repeatedly abusive towards me, and has left me no choice. Others here drop red rep like candy...I do not get that at all.

I give green to LOL's and helpful information mostly, but wherever I see fit. Definitely if I'm trying to make a point but am being unclear and someone comes along and says the same thing but better, I'll rep them. Case in point being what 9BallMarksman stated earlier. He pre-empted a better post than me!

I've never sent a pm thanking for rep but have received a few. I've red-repped a couple of folks too but only when really warranted.

I'm not trying to be rude so please don't take it that way. I don't understand this thought process (you're certainly not the only one who thinks like this). Why is it ok to give a positive message to someone deserving but it is not ok to give a negative message to someone deserving?

Negative rep has the same bearing on life as positive rep - none. It is beyond my comprehension level why people find negative rep taboo or something really bad that shouldn't be done. Its simply a comment disagreeing with someone.

Red rep for you!!! LoL! Just kiddin'!

It's just the way it used to be here...back when it was a kinder and gentler place...and peeps had respect for one another...for the most part.

I remember when it started and that was when the points actually meant something. People were on a quest to see how many green boxes there were and what the pinnacle was. The Pinnacle was reached years ago. Nowadays someone can make one post, get one rep and have a full set of green. The points are so high now that the purpose of building a rep is lost.

This place was just as voilatile back then as it is now, only the faces have changed.

I don't give out much red either, only two or three since I joined. I only give it out when someone personally attacks me or does something bad enough to the whole AZ community. There are plenty of posts I don't agree with on here, but that's what a forum is all about. Being about pool you are going to get some tempers and some big BS types on here, which makes for some interesting arguments. In the end they are just opinions, and I think a person's reputation should not be judged on a difference of opinion. Now the thieves and ones who ONLY cause trouble, red Rep them outta here I say!

You haven't been here all that long so you missed the "rep orgies" as some called them. The rep system on here is very flawed and should not be used to guage a persons reputation. I would advise caution and research if you come across someone with all red bars but that is as far as I would take the rep system here.

People used to give someone a rep with the comment "hit me back". There used to be threads where people said "post in this thread and I'll give you positive rep". People were trying to get on the first page of the rep points list (please don't ask) so buddies were helping buddies out.

Take it for what its worth - a grain of salt.

Man, I love a good orgy, too bad I missed it! lol

I have heard a little bit about the rep contest before and know a lot of rep points were given out amongst certain people to see what the max was. Since it appears the majority of posters I see all have green, and you can't see anybody's actual rep point value, I don't take it too serious. Now iTrader on the other hand I do take serious if I am buying or selling.

Thanks for the info though, and oh, I couldn't help myself so I sent you some green!
