Replacing a 314 ferrule with something else

most who i heard of trying to replace ferrule of 314 shaft have had bad results

You have to know a little something & do it correctly. I've seen some horrible ferrule replacements too...on all kinds of shafts. I assure you I do a professional job...and have done it for many top players. Try using the search function if you'd like to learn more. replacing 314 ferrule

I know someone who had it done. He changed it to an ivory ferrule. He did not know enough to tell the difference so he could not comment. He did say he liked the original shaft (not the predator) better. I asked the predator people at valley forge about this. They said that the shaft is designed for maximum benefit such as reducing deflection just as it is designed. To change anything about the shaft will alter their design. These will lead to what is essentially a different playing shaft.
 
kevin changed my old pre cat 314 to a sniper tip and saber-t ferrule. i couldn't tell a difference between it and another unmodified 314 i had. he did nice work and got the shaft back to me fast too.

Hello Jake, I have done this for a number of customers, especially for their BK break cues. This process involves more than just changing a ferrule though.

Due to the design of the Predator shaft you must also center drill the shaft, which is easy since it hollow, except for some foam anyway, and then construct a tenon for the ferrule to be placed upon.

The first time I did this, it was done as a repair for a cue I sold to a customer. The BK break was a few months old when the ferrule imploded. Below is a photo.

After that repair, I had other customers come to me to Modify their Predator shafts, apparently they think that for the break cue this makes it hit more solid and gives them better control.

^ ouch! a bit off topic, but does anybody know what kind of tip is used on the BK2? It looks to be a black phenolic piece between the ferrule and tip?

Damn, that guy must CRUSH the balls! I still can't believe people brak with ob-1 shafts, after seeing an ob-1 ferrule that Varney sent me. I am now thinking of having a different ferrule put on this ob-1.

No actually the shafts ferrule was defective and it imploded. Predator would not correct the problem, so I just repaired it myself. Since then there has been no problem with the shaft, and the same individual still uses it.

I've seen lots of big breakers using OB-1 shafts and have yet to see a ferrule failure. I know they do happen, but what I'm trying to get at is that ferrule failure with the OB-1 is the exception rather than the rule. And in the event you ever did need to have the ferrule repaired/replaced, Royce's customer service is tough to beat. He goes out of his way to make sure his customers are taken care of.

As for replacing the ferrule, I'm no expert or anything, but I would think that any replacement ferrule + dowel material used would be considerably heavier than the wooden ferrule and result in changing the playing characterisitcs (ie. more end mass, more squirt). If you're going to change the ferrule out and not really care about the low squirt aspect of it, you might as well just use a conventional shaft.

Just my thoughts anyways :)
 
Just got my shaft back from Jack and it looks sweet, Aegis ferrule and moori. The packaging it was shipped in was unbelievable.

1: a yard(I measured it) of super soft flannel was wrapped around the 314(may see if my mom will make a badass pillow case out of it):D

2: bubble wrap and tape around the flannel

3: bubble wrap on both ends to keep it completely stable
