Reputation giving and receiving?

Good evening, everyone.

As a relative newcomer to the forum, I've just been surfing around the site and saw the REPUTATION bar with the green squares. Are these important? I noticed somebody has just given me a blue square for posting a Twilight Zone quote. Will this count for or against me at some point regards posting rights?

Kind regards,
RC.

You need a certain amount of posts before you can give a green or red rep.
...any other color is neutral.

Was that perhaps a gray square? That's what people who are new get to give out. Otherwise it is red and green only.

The reputation function is broken as far as the actual points are concerned. Many people are at the max of 2^31-1. In an amusing twist, such people can only give out positive rep points.

Now the system is mostly a way to give quick, private feedback about a post.

Cheers, Bob.

Yes, it probably is a grey square, sir. It just appeared a bit blue on my screen.

Didn't know that last part. I rcvd a blue a couple weeks ago and I asked and a few people said the blues come from new people without enough posts.

It looks like there are 229 maxed-out members.

I maxed out before a thousand posts...but I still enjoy the rep function.
Like you say, Bob, it's another way of communicating.

...maybe the greenies are part of an Eco conspiracy?

How does one tell who has the best (or worst) reputation?

Click on the "Community" button at the top. Then click on "Members List." Then click on "Reputation" at the top of that column. That will show the members in rank order by reputation. For ties, it is alphabetical.

[So, if you make those 3 clicks, the 229 people who currently have the maximum number of points are listed alphabetically.]

The actual number of points for each member is not shown there, but each member can find his own rep. points, along with a table of "Latest Reputation Received," by clicking on the "User CP" button at the top.

Am I totally missing something here? By the numbers provided by yourself and Bob something seems way off. By you post PT - That would mean you rcvd over 2000 greenies on each post???? And to Bob's post - so if a member was here for 10 years it would take over 500 humdred green is EACH AND EVERY DAY?????? What am I missing or are yall just playing?

Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to explain, sir. Much appreciated. I'll give you a green square! :)

Ok I have wondered if the rep you give is more if you have alot of rep, as opposed to giving less because of little rep points ?

I would think it is in a way of variation according to your rep points.

Agree ?

Now I am super confused. Obviously your points do not coincide with the number of actual greenies you receive. So how does the point system work exactly? My rep point total is 768,794,531.

Also, every time I've attempted to give someone a greenie I click on the little greenie at bottom and it brings up the box. Then when I click on box to add comment the whole thing goes away. The person receives greenie but I can never add text. What am I doing wrong?

When doing this what does the number in parentheses next to name represent?

I thought it represented the sum of a member's feedback, but it doesn't seem to be correct in some cases. I have received five greens and one grey, for example, but have a zero in brackets after my name which, when clicked, says I have no feedback.
