Residents Angered Over New Billiard Hall

Here's an opportunity for the owner to do the right thing and run a respectable operation. It may never change the residents impression but the owners will know their respecful to the community.

The issue as I read the article was not against billiards but the zoning. Typical. Residents don't do anything until it's too late. It's now up to the owner to prove them wrong if the residents fear trouble from the industry reputation.

"""A phone number listed for the club’s address, 4578 Britt Road, had been disconnected. Hally said other similar billiards clubs in the Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District — she counted 15 within three miles """
I want to retire there !!! A billiard community !!~!! Be still my heart .......

I live in Tucker, GA. Right on the line of Gwinett County. If I walk 100 feet East I'm in Lilburn, GA.

There are sooooo many pool rooms in my neighborhood. That's just one of the reasons I moved here.

Mr. Cues 2 is 7.8 miles away.
The Pool Room in Duluth is 9 mileas away

Both big rooms mentioned above are in different directions from me. When I travel to either room I pass by about 6 different pool rooms in either direction.

This place is a billiards Mecca..........

According to MapQuest the proposed new room would only be (Total Est. Distance: 3.18 miles) from my front door.

The nerve of some people, how could they put a new room in soo close to me without telling me 1st. LOL

Yep ! Right now the 1997 Us Open 1-Pocket Champ is sleeping in my spare room. He's been hanging out at the Pool Room in Duluth.

Do'ya want to match up or just get some lessons ?

You could also go to Mr Cues 2 and see Cliff Joiner. He's usually over there scufflin and given up some huge spots.
Cliff cured me of ever wanting to play 1-hole again. I got 12-4 and the snaps and couldn't win. After the 1st few Hundred I resided to the fact that I was just paying for an awesome personal exhibition. Then when we changed the spot to 12-3 and I still couldn't win, I packed up my cue had a beer with him and decided that I would never play 1-hole 4 the cash again. Of course, Cliff bought the beers........with what used to be my money.

there is a lot more going on with this than meets the eye! In the past several months this areas demographics have dramatically changed ! It was originally a predominantly white republican middle class area for years now there has been a influx of Hispanics to the area. This has set off the historical real estate issues of flight from change and these fears of crime etcetera combined with some recent youth gang issues and crime is the source of this battle! It is not a Pool room battle per se but more a ethnic and economic change battle ! Gwinnett for years would not allow public transportation in the county precisely IMO! for this reason to keep the minoritys and specifically the poorer minorities from the county due to fears of what is now happening instead of allocating funds to improve services and living conditions for the poor they chose to try and discourage them a lose lose battle !:(

I can't discredit what you have stated except your implication on the home values. When I moved into my home about 1 year ago it's purchase price was 280K. It is now 360K. Also, I am a minority in my community. I'm not complaining but for the most part my neighborhood is about 90% Vietnamese. One of the things I personally treasure the most about being here in the Atlanta is the ethnic diversity. For the most part it seems to me that most people get along with each other no matter what culture they are from. The gang issue is a problem everywhere and because of this I appreciate that the state of GA now allows me carry my gun with me in my car at all times. Unfortunately, they also make me wear a helmet while riding my scooter but I have high hopes that will change here in the near future.

I am black and live in Smokerise (if you are familiar with the areas!) I am not arguing that gwinnetts mover and shakers by any means has been correct in their stances I am only outlining their reasons / thought processes (IMO totally racist and incorrect) for what has been the counties historic policies ! Let's be honest here this attitude / thought process is not nor has ever been just in Gwinnett! though Gwinnetts historic growth (one of the top fastest growing counties in the U.S.!) over the eighties was totally spurred by the increase of black homeowners in Dekalb and Fulton causing white flight to what at the time was considered the "boondocks" ! :(

I don't even know where to begin on this subject. A lot of people think being poor is a racial issue, I don't. Crime is a racial issue, I don't, Education is a racial issue, I don't. Do I feel that poor uneducated criminals moving into my neighborhood would decrease my property value, yes I do. Please don't misunderstand me. I do not have 1 ounce of prejudice in me. I don't care what culture anyone comes from. We all have the same choices. Now, this being the South and me being a Yankee might have some influence on my perception. but for the most part it's the same everywhere.

I can't say I know the history of Gwinnette county but I do know I have seen this same thing over and over again in many parts of the nation. I don't think it's the fact that Blacks became homeowners that caused what you called the white flight. To me, I see it as property values decreased because of the age of the structures in the community and the local city government at the same time encouraged lower income families to become home owners by reducing the costs associated with purchasing homes in the neighborhood which ultimately drove down the values of the surrounding houses and thus the more financially stable family realized an opportunity to sell their house at a reasonable value and move to somewhere new that they felt would ultimately increase their overall net worth in the future.

??? "a 42 year old custom given to me on my 16th birthday by my uncle Cisero is my treasured cue!"

Cisero Murphy ? Even if it wasn't him, I am extremely happy and honored to be able say that I was at his (Cisero Murphy's) Hall of Fame induction ceramony.

Mike, please don't take this the wrong way, but damn! 12-4 and the breaks? I assume you just never got a shot at your hole right? I'm not a 1p player at all, but I think I'd play Cliff with that spot. Can you elaborate a bit on what happened? Thanks.

Elaborate ? It satrted of bad, got worse then it was over........................

Actually, it started off like this. I broke pretty good each game, I thought, by sending a ball very close to my hole. Then Cliff would manuver to where I had no shot, then he would shoot my ball in. This happened almost every game. It was a freakin nightmare. That 1 ball that Cliff shot in my hole most games was the only ball I ever made in any of the 5 games we played.

I have watched many 1-hole games played by some of the toughest players in the world. Cliff, with no doubt in my mind is one of the very best 1-pocket players in the world. It was worth every penny I lost to him just to be able to see him play that good while I was at the table.

One of the other losses that I endured and enjoyed was playing Larry Nevel some banks. He gave me 10-7 and banked 10 and out on me three times in a row. It took me 4 hours and several different spots to only come out 1 game down. It was such a nightmare that I almost actually felt that I won because I only lost a hundred when it was over. I was SIK !

Thanks for the description Mike. It does sound like a nightmare. The spot seems almost too good to be true. I'm still just shaking my head in disbelief.

This isn't about a pool room going in. It's about a BAR going in. And it's not even about that - it's about anything commercial being there.

Hally said the tract in the middle of a residential area was originally zoned for commercial use in 1984, and residents’ efforts to stop construction of the gas station in 2004 were futile. Now, the same owner is building a billiards club on the property and neighbors are furious that he can get a license to serve beer and wine, despite the residential nature of the area.
“We’re really upset that there’s basically a bar going up,” she said. “The back side is basically 75 feet from the nearest house.”

Mike, I was hoping you might wander into the Duluth Pool Room last weekend - I was there Sat-Mon for a pool clinic. I did see a couple of familiar faces though (not AZBers).

What makes you believe that it is the role of government to improve services and living conditions for minorities? Don't you believe that it's the responsibility of the individual to make his own way in life? I imagine you have done alright for your own self.

Sorry I missed you. I was having a vist at mt Gf's house last Wed-Mon. She lives about 1.5 hours away and it's a tough travel so when I get there I usually stay there.

How was the clinic ?

I hear thet Tom Simpson is an excellent teacher.
