so i keep hearing about how efren is a very good chess player. anyone know his rating ballpark?

Whenever Efren is present at a tourney, he always enjoys a little friendly game of chess. Whether he is playing pool, chess, or cards, he always seems to draw a crowd around him. I've heard it from others in the know that he is an excellent chess player.

Picture of Efren playing chess.

And...

...when he's not playing chess, he enjoys playing a Filippino game known as Pusoy with his buddies, i.e. Bustie, Alex, Santos, and Jose Parica.

Here's Efren playing Santos some Pusoy at the last Open.

Chess is considered a sport in Asia and Europe.

I once heard through the rumor mill that Efren was a world class chess player, but two different top chess players whom I know disagreed when they watched him play. Though he is a serious chess player, he is a good, not great, chess player. For those who understand chess ratings, according to a friend of mine who teaches chessand who has watched Efren play, Efren's probably in the 1800 to 1900 range.

The only guy I know of who is championship caliber in both pool and chess is Danny Barouty of Queens, NY.

Actually, the game you pictured them playing is another Filipino game known as Tongits... ;)

And the guy behind Santos is giving Bustamante some signal. :D

We know that these people are world pool champoins, but still serious in other , what we call... matters. That's what makes life fun. It's like saying.. "Go ahead practice pool, we're just here playing (pusoy? or chess), we'll just beat you later". Any more pics?

This pic didn't come out so hot, but it's a picture taken at the Open inside the players' practice room. Santos, Brook from HardTimes in Bellflower, and Efren are playing a card game, most likely the same one that is shown in the other picture above. Bustamante and Alex are checking out the action! :D

thanks sjm. 1800-1900 is very good for non chess players and i would say that's about a 'competitive average' for people who dont know the rating system.

barouty's 2200+ FIDE is very strong, but championship-level of what? a person with that rating would struggle to win a provincial championship in canada (a country not known for chess).

SJM- Efren and Danny played chess 2 years back in Queens- Danny lost- I just saw the end. Perhaps Danny gave him a spot but from the comments Danny made after he lost, I dont think so.

if a FIDE 2250 lost squarely to reyes (without blundering), reyes is a very very good chess player.

They need 4 players to play pusoy. Who's the guy on the left out of the picture?
L to R (just on the table) Efren Reyes, Edgar Acaba, Santos Sambajon and Django Bustamante. They are playing a game called "Tong-its".

Nostroke, I assure you that my comments are well researched. A top chess instructor that has watched Efren play chess is a close frined of mine. As this instructor lives in the NYC area just like us, I'd be happy to introduce you to him if you'd like.

I am not a serious chess player, and cannot offer any opinion of my own here. I am only passing on the comments of two people I believe to qualified, only one of whom lives in this area.

I have no idea whether Barouty gave Efren a spot, or for that matter, whether they played chess or speed chess, a couple of years back.

If it has to do with gambling, I would think Efren would be good at it. I can remember being young and gambling at the game of Marbles. I slowly graduated into the game of pool. At the age of eleven I was a state Marble champion, so the hand eye coordination in pool was a given. Question: Do you think being gifted in one game makes a person gifted in others? Are pros in any sport born with the natural ability are do they obtain it through practice?

"Are pros in any sport born with the natural ability are do they obtain it through practice?"

yes and yes. if there isn't some natural ability there a person could practice forever and never get to play at an "A" level, while id bet that people like ronnie o'sullivan could play at the snooker equivalent of an "A" level with MUCH less practice time.

Actually in the world of professionnal pool I think Alain martel has to be one of the best chess player if not the best. Alain has done many chess tournaments and is ranked between 2100 and 2200. Whenever Efren and Alain meet they always play together and Efren always quits him (although they don't play for big money but more for pleasure). Alain tells me Efren should ranked around 1700-1800. Another good chess player is Steve Davis, very close to Efren's caliber.

OK i guess i was mislead by what i saw/heard and made some incorrect assumptions.

Maybe it was the end of a speed pool game. I saw them playing and walked over. They both had 2 pieces and Danny was retreating. Efren made a move and Danny conceded/toppled his king. Then he stood up, with this incredulous look on his face, held his arms apart and said to Efren "What don't you play good?" then again " What don't you play good"? Efren of course just gave him that sheepish smile and Danny walked away.
