Fiberglass cues came out relatively recently, just over forty years ago! 
Two words: cost.

They have a new line they're calling the "G-w Series" which has a "Premium Glass Fiber" shaft and composite butt, which is what I'm pretty sure OP is referring to:

I have an Avid shaft myself. The few times that I have played with it, I have been somewhat impressed.
Everyone is just so prissy these days.
Earl Strickland did more with that fiberglass coated shaft back in the day than 99.9% of pool players could do today.
As a matter of fact, Mark Tadd did more with that cuetec graphite coated shaft that was the same color as the butt of the cue than most players could do today and those graphite cues played all sorts of strange.
Didnt matter. He fired in tons of balls in with it.
Tech today is WAY better than the early 90s.
Granted, someone will pick up a Rhino cue with its non wood whatever fake material butt and play fantastic with it.

Just got another email from rhino saying their new glass composite shaft is comparable to CF.
Anybody else see this??
They call it the G-shaft. Premium glass fiber. Supposed to play like wood with carbon fiber accuracy and reliability.
I like Rhino's bus model and hope they succeed in carving out a market share. Affordable Merch in this game is unheard of.
Hope this one isn't a bust for them. If anybody on here buys one, please post review asap!!!

I hope it works for them as well. I had both the AVID, and a Jacoby Black at one time. Nothing against the Jacoby shaft, but I honestly enjoyed the AVID enough that I sold the Black.
