rhythm conflicting with position

Was looking for some advice from some of the players and teachers. Sorry if this is a repeat.

When I play fast, my shot-making is at its best. But I tend to sacrifice shape.

Slowing it down gives me time to see patterns, but then I find myself missing and choking more (alot more).

I guess its a classic right/left brain conflict. How is the compromise found? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

sidenote: been lurking the site and forums for a while. This has got to be the best reading source of anything pool. The magazines don't even come close. Thank you AZ.

this might help

I'm not a trainer, but I ordered Geno's DVD on perfect aiming (acctually it's more about form and alignment than aiming) and it has some great info. It has helped me to analyze my stroke and to see shots better.

Here's the thread link:

Every bit of info can help. Just my two cents.

I agree with you by the way; AZBilliards has the best info out there.

Take your time between shots to do your thinking, but once you go into your routine stay with the quicker rhythm that seems works well for you.

u need to do ur thinkin away from the table then play ur quick rhythm when down on the shot, step back see the shot walk in play it quick, step back see it walk in etc etc ...

Consistent routines and checklists.
Think before shooting, then shoot without thinking.

I'm with the "Pooltcr" on this one. Sounds like you need to take a long look at your three pre-shot routines.......SPF=randyg

Well there are two types of players, The fast and loose and the slow and deberite ( spell check just woke up) From what i seen you cant convert from fast and loose to slow and debilerate kinda impossbile to swap.

I went thru the same things years ago and and choose to play slow and debilerate but still play fast and loose when im feeling cocky. And im a much much much better player playing fast and loose if your playing better fast and loose then stick with it your postion will get better with practice drills on postion with time.

Do not use momentum to win games. Most people start out like this in league and it's a mistake.

People that get use to playing like this struggle when the game isn't going there way i.e getting hook, bad leads etc.

Smooth and controlled, that's the name of this game. You go at the pace that allows you do that.

I'm also a fast player, and in the past had similar troubles. I just played on the edge of my chair. This works really well when the table is open without any unorthodox trouble spots, but in some cases, I I'd just start running only to find myself on the wrong side of a ball 'cause I had only played shape on that one shot. I had to learn to play in spurts. In other words, like everyone else has said in previous posts, you generally want to play 2 balls ahead, so before I get down on a shot, I'll plan it in 3 ball spurts. Then once I'm down, I don't stop.
Do all your thinking/planning when you're standing up, but start by thinking/planning in 3 ball runs, and try to increase as you go.

This. If you shoot best fast, then shoot fast. Then step away, think through your plan for the rest of the rack, think about the next shot and visualize the CB path, and analyze every part of the shot that needs analysis. Then go back into "shoot" mode, clear your head, get down, shoot fast, and then step back into "think" mode again.

Most players, if not all, play their best when they think carefully between shots, but clear their mind and basically go unconscious before getting down and pulling the trigger.
