Shooter owes next game unless the table is on free. I seem to recall arguments between people with 50, 100 dollar tabs over the deal. More often than not, those who pays standoffs are settled by a disgusted samaritan.

I've seen 8 on the break as a win, loss and most commonly re-spotted (which is how it should be, and how anyone I know or play with plays). I was under the impression that this was unless the 8 and cue ball are made on the break, resulting in a loss.
There are no coin operated tables where I am, so I have always played that it is re-spotted (or a loss if scratch at the same time). In the UK, most pubs will let you open it up and re-spot it. But then the price of a coin operated table is 1 or 2 GBP now... no one would play if it was over in a shot...
There is a junk bar league in the city that fritters between win/loss on a whim each season (but anyone playing American table seriously here isn't playing 8ball on it... That is for green baize here in China lol)
8 ball made on the break, cue ball still on the table - no foul. Breakers option to break again or spot the 8 ball and keep shooting.
8 ball made on the break & scratch - opponents option to break or spot the 8 ball and continue shooting.
WPA, VNEA, BCAPL all have this language.

In the instance mentioned he scratched and made the 8. So was specifically talking about that instance, and that is Interesting to know. Though I don't play a lot of American 8ball. Would love to see it played on 9ft/4" cornered Rasson tables with a universal rule set though!

They play if you make the 8 and foul it’s a loss of game. Making the 8 and the CB leaving the table was a foul so I lost game and set.
They also play that the 8 on the break is a win. If I hadn’t fouled I would have won.
Another ridiculous loss, from a couple of days ago--again, local Wednesday 8-ball tourney. My opponent was truly a banger. Hit hard but without any remote accuracy. He still seemed to be enjoying the game though.
Anyway, I wound up leaving myself with the cue ball at the head end of the table, with no good look on the 9. Decided the 2-cushion kick was simple to make a legal hit, and called the upper-left (in the graphic), in case it happened to cut back that way (planning the kick-cut to that direction). I struck firm, to make sure I got contact and a cushion, but the CB hit the 9 "early", and cut it to the 8, which then walked perfectly dead-center into the bottom-left corner!
Note: The way I placed the 5 here, it looks like there might have been room for the single-cushion kick--there wasn't. I even considered the 2-cushion Z, shooting at the cushion above the 5, towards the 4, then up to the 9, but that was just dumb.

Ouch. I went through a couple years of casual 8 ball with no booby traps going off and then a couple more years with several occurrences. Nothing you can do.
