Ring question

Is it worth taking joint ring off a shaft and put it on another shaft or just have some one build me a new ring for my playing shaft? I've been dragging the same shaft around for 15 years and since the ringwork finally cracked I'm going to go ahead and have it match a cue.

If the ring work is in great shape, and you want it to match your cue, that's the best way. A local repair guy told me years ago that thats what he does, and he does great work.

Yeah, the shaft I want to take the rings off is unplayed. I wouldn't give up the shaft would I? I was just going to put solid black collar on the original shaft. Would it end up being the length of the collar shorter?

You don't just take the rings off. You drill a hole in the middle & then slice them off. The donor shaft will be ruined...JER

O.d.

Just for thought.
What about the Outside Diameter,
Unless the existing ring is machined off concentric (fit and face)
and reinstalled concetricly (is there such a word?) on the new
shaft. Otherwise, if the ring assembly runs out, gotta turn it and
hope the existing ring has enough diameter or there will be low spots
and gotta hope the finish can build up those low spots.
Is the existing ring unique?
If not, I'd rather be safe and install a new ring and collars, cost shouldn't
be too much for ring and collars....

Rings aren't anything fancy, 16 slot micarta, looks alot like what Chris Nitti uses. I think I'll just have one made up & put on old trusty.
Thanks for everyones input.

Every cue is a different situation. It is normally easier, for me, to make a new set of deco-rings for a new shaft on a cue. Deco-rings are usually just a number of common segments put together and over the years anyone who does cue repair ends up with enough material to make many hundreds of different styles. Once in a while an uncommon deco-ring will appear. This is especially true with Meucci's since so often he uses molded plastic for rings which would be hard to duplicate. In these cases I like to use the ones off of the old shaft. As has already been stated, to use the old deco-ring usually means that the original shaft needs to be destroyed. It can be saved but takes extra steps and time.

I agree, easier to make your own when possible, but there are times when that's not an option for some depending on access to the original materials. I would say the odds are better with solid ringwork, to at a minimum get a close match, but some decos or materials may not be an option for everyone. Therefore the original ring may be needed. You may be in good shape with modern micarta though. Greg

I just finished a Predator shaft for a Meucci yesterday. A fellow in England called me and said that he was go to purchase a new Meucci from a dealer here in the U.S. and wanted me to adapt a 314-2 shaft to it. I told him I didn't know for sure if I could match a Meucci's deco-ring or not. The cue came and it has a very simple ring. I e-mailed him and told him that it would be easy to match except that the off-white color of the rings maybe a little different shade. He said to just go ahead and destroy the new red dot shaft and use the original deco-ring as he had no intention of using that shaft anyway.

This is a different subject but do any of you guys ship internationally much? I went to ship this cue yesterday by Fed X and the price would have been 89.00 plus ins. It put me into shock. I went to the post office and the price was 28.00 plus ins. which came to 34.35 total. I asked Fed X if they had any discounts or such and they said if I had my own account I could get a 13% discount. That's not much. I asked how does Talisman, who uses Fed X, ship their tips plus shirt and towel, from Bangkok for free shipping?

Sounds pretty near to one I need to do for a guy. solid ringwork, white with 1 wood ring in between I think. It should be easy to make My own, and save his original. The off white looks like a perfect match for MP. He wants me to make a 31-32" snooker sized shaft. I know, Not a good combination from My experiences either, but He sure shoots good with such a small shaft. I warned about the whip, but If I thought anyone could ajust for It, it would be him. The problem is I need a good 31-32" shaft dowel, so If anyone reads this and has any for sale please let Me Know. The shafts I have are all 30", and to short.

I have another guy I have 2 standard shafts in the works being turned, and it's pretty much the same kind of ring work.

I haven't used international shipping in a while, but that sure sounds expensive to Me. Greg
