I met John a couple of years ago at a tournament. I remember the event well because it was the first time I ever played John and the last time I ever played Ginky. It's a real shame this happened. I don't see nearly as many young faces in pool as I did when I was John's age and it was encouraging to see someone who was clearly so devoted to getting better. He had a lot of promise. He had a strong break, solid pocketing skills and a great sense of speed.
The last time I saw him was only a couple of weeks ago, the Tuesday before Hurricane Sandy hit. I hadn't seen much of him since Ginky died. I asked him how he was doing and he said things were good, he just moved to The Bronx and seemed really excited about his life moving in a different direction.
My condolences to his friends and family. There is no greater pain than the loss of someone with so much life ahead of them.
