RIP Tony Ellin, on ESPN Classic now

I swear he didn't ever have alot of tip on his cue....He seemed to like his tip cut down very very short. Whatever happened to his g'friend/wife?? I can't remember her name... It seemed like it was shelby???

Tony Ellin died when his car was hit by a train. He apparently tried to beat the train and misjudged it.

Tony's wife was a striking beauty. She remarried a couple years ago. It was written up in one of the major magazines. She married a league player. If I find the article, I'll post a little more info.

If I recall correctly, He was on his way to pick up his daughter, who was waiting after ballet practice, and he was late.

Pretty horrible story. I did see that match, and Tony was a monster on the pool table.

RIP

so tragic

I didn't know Mr. Ellin, but I saw and liked his shooting both in person and on TV.....I really felt sorry for him when he played Mr. Varner in one of those "Challenge of Champions" tournaments ($50,000 winner take all) on TV.....it was down to the last and deciding game; he was running out and missed a pretty easy (5 ball?), and Mr. Varner got up (in disbelief) and finished the run out and won the $50K..... .......... Rest in Peace, Mr. Ellin....I think you were one of the pool world's nice guys........

Tony was a very good friend of mine.

Tony was on his way to pick up his daughter at Toys R Us. He had just gotten back from Vegas that morning. Had lost his match to Efren the round before the tv rounds. He was looking down at the floor board is what the conductor said. He was probably grabbing his phone, but he never knew the train was coming.

Shelby remarried the league operator in the Charleston area Bruce Bates i think is his name.

We held a Tony Ellin Memorial tourney(The Hurricane Open)in June of 2006 in Goose Creek, SC. Alot of his closest friends attended the event. Johnny Archer won the tourney and was very proud because he and TE were so close. All weekend they told stories about him and their adventures with him. I never got a chance to meet him but from what I hear from Shannon and the others he had a great sense of humor and was genuinely a nice guy.

Shelby Bates did marry Bruce who is the league operator for the Charleston APA. I am glad that she has found happiness after such a tragic event. Bruce is a super nice guy and Shelby and Ashley are very happy.

The GSBT usually has 3-4 tournaments in that area every year. They both work very hard with the leagues and are always helpful in promoting our tour.

Guy could play a little bit.

Tony was a great friend, and a truly awesome person. To truly know Tony around the pool world, you just had to love him. He was so funny, very seldom did you ever see Tony get mad. I would talk to him on the phone at least once a week. I spoke with him on the phone 45 minutes the night before the unbelievable
tragedy. He was coming to play some 10-ball with me in Florida the following week. I really miss his friendship, and playing pool with him.

(I'LL NEVER FORGET MY FRIEND)
(HE WAS A GREAT PLAYER)

Here is something I wrote about Tony for this website several years ago.

Remembering A Friend

My book, Lessons in 9 Ball is dedicated to Tony Ellin. I started to writing about pool and pool instruction because Tony Ellin suggested it during a conversation we had about the break shot.

Tony was a champion. A monster at the table. He also had the best book in the room too.

I still contend that Tony had the most powerful break - ever - in the game of 9 ball. In the 1993 US Open, he made it to the finals against Earl - I think the matches from that tournament show Tony playing at his peak.

I miss him a lot.
