Road player test

Do you think ...

A Hustler is going to give his real name and where he is from to begin
with when he is in foreign territory .... lol That's a good one ...

Winning the US Open killed Gabe Owen's road money, and he was
making good scores. Now, he only gets to play Champions ... or has
to spot the world to get action.

I don't get it.....I don't really think anyone other than Efren or Earl will have a hard time getting action....Known or Unknown....Prime Example is one Tony Chohan....Obviously a very strong player....and everyone knows about him...He even publicly came out and offerd up big money games.....He does not seem to ever have a problem finding action....

Also...to answer the question....I heard Gabe Owen say on ESPN that he is the best money player right now...So it must be him that is the best.....

Also...He announced it on TV....Is he having any problems finding action????

I think the "knocking" is a by gone era....I actually think that by "knocking" someone it gets guys egos stirred up to "take off" this now famous "road warrier" ....It may very well create action these days....

You got to look at the big picture.......

Hell, look at Keith McCready! He has no problem finding any action either!

gabe can only get action in "gunfights" now. meaning that he has to play people on his level, or he has to give up the world. before then he could get action where he had the upper hand and would at least have a guaranteed score to look forward to.

that action is now gone, there is no more easy money to be made, everyone knows who he is, and if he wants action, he's going to have to play lights out to get the cash.

remember, it takes two for the hustle to work. the mark most of the time, thinks he's got the nuts and is going to rob the hustler..........so who's actually in the wrong here? the hustler for taking advantage of this, or the mark who THINKS he's getting away with murder?

VAP

VAP,
I think even you will have to agree that the mark does not ALWAYS think he's robbing the hustler. Perhaps he is just interested in a fair game between 2 gentlemen. Hiding your skill level just seems unethical no matter the motive of the hustler or the hustle-ee. Armed robbery of unethical people is still wrong (those stories of money stolen at gunpoint seem to generate the most criticism here), why isn't hustling them?

I agree with OHB that the road stories are a major factor in generating interest in the game, but still necessity is no excuse for unethical behavior. I think even OHB has found that there is always a ("gasp") real job that you can fall back upon, if ethical gambling and tournament play can't support your lifestyle. Boring, safer, more ethical.

Gunfighters Can Get Shot - You Know?

Trying to "Make A Living" as a Gunfighter
(Which Gabe has NO Choice of, anymore)
is not very conducive to a steady diet.

Hell, Louie used to say "He couldn't keep a Parakeet alive - On The Road - BUT - With enough butter, The little fellow didn't taste too bad"!

GUNFIGHTING = GAMBLING = STUPID!

“BET” - “NEVER GAMBLE” - with your next meal!

Let's see ...

I watched Gabe on ESPN, and did not here him say he was the best money man the world, and I know him quite well, and that is not his style at all,
besides he knows better.

As far as the comment about having a (gasp) day job to fall back on, that's
a little shaky nowdays with all the 'downsizing' going on (like I did after
18 1/2 years at a company). At least when you get 'downsized' in Pool, you can come right back and play again, and they don't care if you are over
50 or not!

In case you're wondering, companies consider their employees as
'expenses' nowdays, not an asset, and if they can reduce their 'expenses',
they will do it, and you will have 20 minutes to box up your things, and
get off company property. bye, don't let the door hit you in the ass.

Even CEO's can get fired!

As opposed to not giving someone the proper weight they deserve. Fuck that shit! If someone plays A speed, then they should play at that level when they gamble and give their oppenent the proper weight. If they lose, so what, they lost honestly. When I gamble, I play to my best level at all times.

Here's some advice for anyone wanting to go on the road to hustle/con/rob people of their money. Rob a fucking bank, it'll save you the time and effort. Plus, you won't have to live in your car or shitty motels.

Later.

My thing is this. If you want to gamble or bet honestly, find someone who play that game with you. If not, and you want to hustle and/or be a money player, you had better be prepared for whatever! That goes for the hustler too. If you are doing what you have to do to make money, you better know that people will try and find you out...it's inevitable, especially if you start taking folks money consistenly!

O.H.B., explained to me in one of my posts that the purpouse of a hustler IS to deceive, so if you trying to play with the hustlers should already know what to expect. No disrespect to anyone trying to make a living on the road, because you have to do what you have to do in order to survive.

I know my goal in pool is to become a high level tourney player, not a high level road player. I don't plan on quitting my day job, so I don't see the point in any high stakes action; however, if I find someone I know that's a little better than me and not purpously being fake with their game, I might try some small wager games, but that's it!

This is one reason why I don't like TAP and APA! There will always be someone, in some form or way who is trying to keep from being "noticed" during the regular session, but when it's time to play to get to Vegas, everyone decides to become a pro. Now I KNOW that this doesn't apply to everyone, so don't trip! There is probably some sandbagging in BCA leagues too, but not as much as the other leauges and you still HAVE to bring your "A" game if you want to win...period.

It was a UPA event after the US Open on ESPN......Ewa was interviewing him before his match....They were talking about how some people thought it was a fluke that he won The US Open.... It was in that discussion that Gabe threw in the "I am the best money player in the world right now" .......I never said it was his style...but I have it on DVR

I believe he actually said, "one of the best", not that he was THE best.

Terminology

I'd like to get todays terminology straight.
When I was a kid a "Shark" was anybody who was damn good at pool.
A "Road Shark" (roadplayer) was a shark that pulled into town and took on all comers (nothing decietful).
A "Hustler" was a shark who pulled into town to con the folks (likely to spend time in hospital).
Woofing was "talkin' shit" (used by loud mouths).
Is this still the terminology?

Terry (who's been away from that scene for a looong time)

I think Efren has less trouble getting action than anyone I have ever seen. I can't remember him ever not having a game no matter what poolhall he was in. Not only that but he gets a whole lot of soft action for decent money just because people want to say they played him. I am sure it would be the same for Earl if he wanted it to be that way.

I know in my little pond we usually know when a good road player is coming through well in advance. Have since before the internet. One good score against a decent player and the word was out everywhere. Its been that way for a long time.

If a player never played in a tournament, never got their photo taken, and settled for small fish then maybe they could stay unknown today. Otherwise I think its gotta be hard to sneak up on anyone.

just one small fish in a small ponds opinion of course...

What does it mean to - HUSTLE?

The official definitions according to 3 Internet resources.

“HUSTLE”

To misrepresent one's skill in (a game or activity) in order to deceive someone, especially in gambling.

To misrepresent one's ability in order to deceive someone, especially in gambling.

To lure less skillful players into competing against oneself at (a gambling game).

SO - I DIDN'T INVENT IT - I JUST DID IT - AND DAMN GOOD TO.

Ps. Why are the "Sneaky-Pete" Cues soooooooo Popular ???
