Road Trip

The Life of a Pool Player is Like That of a Fox.

Go for it!!! If you don't you'll always wonder. You'll have a blast. Be non assuming or arrogant. If you seem meek you don't have to fight your way out as often. Lewis said park close to the door, back in. Make notes, a mark will always be a mark.

And don't forget, if you look around the room and don't see any suckers, guess what?

Also, be careful what you wish for.

Long hours are a must.

Don't tell your road partner about your secret "get home" stash.

A car with low miles and in good condition and a driver to boot should be in high demand for some road players who don't have a car or insurance for one. Throw a couple of air mattresses into the car and now, if you can just use some business person's gasoline credit card for a year with their permission, you have got it made.

Be prepared to live the life of a fox/pool player: Chicken today , feathers tomorrow.

Way to go Fast Lenny you just killed about a million kajillion $s in action for yourself by posting your photo on the internet. Unless that's a disguise.

Thats a disguise right:rolleyes: ;)

That's probably Walt or Tonya's real picture. :D

You guys got any ideas on vehicles? Thinking of something with plenty of room running on 4 cylinders maybe 6.

One thing I neglected to mention is that whether I stay in 1 location for awhile or move around makes no significant difference, because I do not live anywhere. I crash at rest stops in my car. I purchase motels when I can afford them. Even at the present moment.

Woof,
Reading, I see you're young but you already have got heart and some experience as a pool player. :)

If you pass by New Orleans someday, I'll buy you a fox's dinner (the good one). While I can't afford to be on the road, I love for the road to pass my way.

Best Wishes,

JoeyA (envious of the road players, but careful about what he wishes for)

Sounds great. Where are some good action spots in or around New Orleans?

The Bangers play at Corner Pocket in Kenner, LA. Collect there before going going to the player's room at Buffalo Billiards. STAY AWAY FROM ANY OTHER POOL ROOMS in the greater New Orleans area.

You can make a pitstop at Two Sisters Billiards in Slidell, La.

Don't tell me when you're coming or I will have to out you as being a C player traveling with a better player.

After you make a collection, you can tell me who you are and we can play or not and then go get a bite to eat.

Good luck!

on to Houma and Lafayette

A swing through Slidell, New Orleans, Houma and Lafayette could plump up a couple of travelers pretty nicely if they had their ducks in a row. If they had a little steer around Cajun Country they could probably spend another week in the area. The fringe benefits for a young man are very nice too.

ironman...I agree with your assessments regarding 'the road', although you're probably pretty low on your double/triple figures from 30 yrs ago. I travelled then, and I travel now. It's more like 5x-10x more expensive then back then (unless you live in your car, and eat at McD's). IMO, the real reason it's more difficult is that there are LOTS more 'average' players that have the skill to win today, than there were 30 yrs ago. With the proliferation of books, videos, lessons, leagues, etc. there are just a whole lot of reasonably skilled poolplayers out there everywhere. As was mentioned already, not many are willing to gamble much, if all...and some of them you'd want to be careful gambling with (or find yourself facing an unruly group outside waiting for you). The 'public perception' of the 'hustling' poolplayer has not changed much, since it was so accurately depicted in The Hustler almost 50 years ago!

I've heard all sides of this and I couldn't blame you if you went either way.

Pool is not what it was 30 years ago. Money is a lot tighter and players are a bit wiser than in years past. When I was 25 it was nothing to hit the bars and scuffle up $200. It was no big deal. Now it is hard to beat anyone out of $200 anymore and now that $200 anin't worth $200. Gas has soared, motels have at least tripled, and meals have doubled at least and tripled in most places.

Even at that I never thought playing just small action was the way to play on the road. SUre, you needed it to cover the NUT and all, but you can't be afraid to take off the score. Those chances are fewer and farther between.

At the same time, if you want to be real serious about the game, there is no better training ground. When you are on the road it becomes your main focus without all the local distractions. You rely on your wit and learn very quickly what kind of Heart you have. When you get home, you realize just how boring home can be.

I wish you well and hope you find the right partner. You do though have to learn to rely on yourself and not expect your partner to do all the work. BUT,,,,,jump up and play in the right situation, not just to prve something to him. Don't do it out of guilt or ego. That will bring about losses and more importantly blown scores. Ego is a dangerous thing on the road.

I had a blast with it for years and years and now you couldn't get me out of the county but for different reasons. I hop you have half the fun I did.

You can still make money shooting pool in bars with in 10 sq. miles of your bed. Not big money, but if your smart about it you can make a blue-collar paycheck a week. Most of the road men now are lucky if they pull that down after splits with stake horse and other expenses. Johnnyt

The more I frequent a single place or places all nearby each other the more I see alot of the same faces. Most of the time I approach people I've played previously I get rejected for even the cheapest games, by them and their friends.

LAY IT DOWN.......

And when they tell you, how good you are, LIE LIKE A POLITICIAN. :grin-devilish:

(Otherwise, look for new, lucrative customers where you are not known)
