Rock Stars, Pool Cues, and Turning 50

I am turning 50 in March. Funny, I still feel like I'm just a kid in a lot of ways. But then I see people dying. The heroes of my youth are leaving. The rock stars are dying. I see it almost every day in the news.

At the same time I see the market flooded with old cues. Abe Rich, Palmer, block letter JOSS, Adam, old Brunswicks, and more. I have seen very early Hueblers with pill bumpers, same with Meucci Original. And Sampaio cues are everywhere, just pick the model you want. The old customs are coming out as well, and the real old antiques too. And the prices are low.

Estate sales, online auctions, craigslist, swipswap, Goodwill, and more are turning up cues. People are selling grampa's cue, or even giving it away.

That makes me sad, and it makes me wonder, will my cue be sold someday to a stranger for cheap, only to be banged around by some teenager while he whiles away his time creating the Idiocracy.

Will my JOSS cue end up in a bin at a second hand store with umbrellas like the Abe Rich cue I found?

Will there be a swipswap ad for my JOSS cue that reads "old billiards que, detachable, thread wound handle, asking $50"

Now, I don't think my family would do that. But I do wonder now. When I see some kid selling Grampa's 50-60 year old cue or offering to trade it for crap like video games I have to really wonder. I wonder not just about the cues, but about the perspectives and values of the generation that inherits them.

Yeah, the cue market has been soft for a while. It's a buyer's market. And that trend is continuing. And the number of classic, antique, and collectible cues on the market is increasing. But when I see it linked to the generation that is dying it makes me wonder.

What is the future of pool?

.

I think the future of pool looks good in the Philly area. The future of real poolrooms are a little more tenuous. There is a lot of barroom pool up here and I think it is growing among millenials thanks to TAP and APA (neither my cup of tea) and 7 footers. There are about 4 real poolrooms in the Philly area that have excellent equipment and great owners that actually know what they are doing and love the game. Personally I see a few younger people taking up the game in the rooms but not enough.

I have two daughters, 10 and 11 They know about my cues and what they're worth. I think they'll want to keep them? I hope they do? I wonder the same thing. I hope they aren't sold for what I told my wife I bought them for!

My kids enjoy shooting pool. We have a table in our house, in my Man Cave. The 10 year old likes it more. She just loves to be with me and enjoys my company.

Good post, make me think...

I'm a old cue 'junky'. Adam/Helmstetter, Vikings, Palmers, Brunswick's, Riches etc....Always scanning.

Picked up a real nice Ebony 4 pointer Mohawk a few months ago. Been looking for one for sometime just to play and collect. Looks sharp, Plays nice. Would be nice to refinish and have new matching shaft made.

Called Scott at Proficient and left several messages with no return call ?. Probably too busy. I heard he liked working on the old Mohawks. No rush, it looks good the way it is for now.

Good rolls,

-Kat,

To address your question, I'm a geezer and already live in a retirement community. My wife knows that my primo Gold Crown goes to the homeowners clubhouse so they have a "real" table. My cheap cues go with the table and the better ones to whatever pool friends that are still left. I think my Frey SP will go with me, in the box.

My cues will be distributed in my will. Several will go back to thefonz if he outlives me. One or two will return to their maker. The remainder will go to my daughter along with the story of each (and estimated value). Likewise with my antique pool items.

Chopdoc I understand your concern. If it helps I will give you $65 for the JOSS and include it in the selection for my daughter. She is a very responsible 21 yo now, and will be an even more responsible 71 yo when I die at 107. PM me your address and I'll get the money out to you
