Rodney- what happened?

Hopefully this will not have an adverse affect on Rodney so he can concentrate on the remaining matches.

Just to lighten things up guys, here's a thought...

Subject: English Anyone?

"Asylum for the Verbally Insane"

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes, But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes. One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,Yet the plural of moose should never be meese. You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice, Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men, Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen? If I speak of my foot and show you my feet, And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet? If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those, Yet hat in the plural would never be hose, And the plural of cat is cats, not cose. We speak of a brother and also of brethren, But though we say mother, we never say methren. Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him, But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple.English muffins weren't invented in England. We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? We ship by truck but send cargo by ship. We have noses that run and feet that smell. We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway. And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

And, in closing, if Father is Pop, how come Mother's not Mop?

Sick Leave

I urgently needed a few days off work,
But, I knew the Boss would not allow me to take leave.
I thought that maybe if I acted 'Crazy'
Then he would tell me to take a few days off.
So, I hung upside-down on the ceiling and made funny noises!

My co-worker (who's blonde) asked me what I was doing.

I told her that I was pretending to be a light bulb ,
So, that the Boss might think I was 'Crazy' and give me a few days off.

A few minutes later the Boss came into the office and asked,
'What in the name of good GOD are you doing ?'

I told him I was a light bulb.

He said, 'You are clearly stressed out.'
Go home and recuperate for a couple of days.'

I jumped down and walked out of the office...

When my co-worker (the blonde) followed me, the Boss asked her,
'...And where do you think you're going?!'

She said,
'I'm going home too, I can't work in the dark!!

Thanks, Kevin. This thread needed to be hi-jacked.

Let's focus on get-well wishes for Smorg today. (Thanx JB for the reminder)

Damned if you do Damned if you don't

Rules are written to address issues. Obviously, this has been an issue and a rule needed to be made to address this. We all know this COULD be an issue. I would hate to see anyone like Rodney leave a tournament but as a director it is your job to address issues. Even it wasn't and issue Rodney's children created you cannot apply rules differently for some and not others. I mean how would you handle this issue? Would you wait until it was an issue? How long would you wait? Would you wait one or two racks of watching players clearly distracted by this?

I think any tournament director should be able to make rules to address these kinds of issues and if not we would all be complaining that players were distracted by screaming children.

Jay is correct. It is Barry's event to police as he sees fit. But Jay seems to say that the sign was not put up at the beginning of the tournament, and inadvertently thrown up in the middle of Rodney's match. I don't agree with that.

If there was an age limit rule, then it should have been addressed at the beginning of the tournament. If the sign was thrown up in a rush, that may be why it was so unprofessional looking. They really should have gotten someone whose spelling and penmanship was better, though. It is, in fact, the most prestigious tournament in America.

If the sign was up before the open started then Rodney should understand. But if it went up after him and his family arrived AND the kids where behaving as someone said earlier, then it just seems wrong and I dont blame Rodney for being pissed. Whats with all the new rules at the open, no headphones, no hats, no earplugs, no kids. Foreigners dont have to play each other early on. whats next theyre gonna make SVB keep his hearing aid on; since others arent allowed to wear earplugs?

Its a great event i just dont understand all the new rules.

Kids

If there was no previous mention about the age limit and my kids traveled to see me play, I would be highly pissed off if they were singled out and banned. If they were being disruptive, then I'm sure his wife would take them out of the room. If they were being disruptive and stayed in the room, then I could see taking some action.

I see players kids in the stands on tv every now and again. What is the big deal?

What is ironic, is that Rodney's kids were probably acting closer to their true age than half the players in the tournament.

Rodney's wife and kids was in the stands while Rodney and Danny Harriman was playing. They was well behaved and did not cause any kind of disturbance. If I was Rodney I would have reacted the same way. These players have to do a lot of traveling, and when their families can travel with them, I feel that it is a good thing. I stand behind Rodney 100%

I see what you are saying but if the rule is no one under 6 years old then that stands for anyone under 6 years old regardless of who they are related to. Someone mentioned if 6 is a magical cut off number. Probably not, but that's the number they decided on. Rules are rules and they apply to everyone. Should I be allowed to speed through the streets like a maniac because my brother in-law is a cop? Should a minor be allowed to drink because his dad owns a bar? If the person in charge of this says no one under 6 then it's no one under 6.

Rules are written for a reason, and this is a good one you cant have every player in the tournament with there entire family in there especially the little ones crying and running around its the us open and is a job for all players so it should be taken seriousley.

What about the apparent fact that he was not made aware of the 'rule' prior to bringing the whole family out?

One thing though, people that are against what happened seem to be assuming that Rodney's kids were sitting there like little angels. They may not be monsters but even if they were just fidgety or giggling that would be enough to warrant asking the mother to remove them from the arena and then putting up a sign to prevent it from happening again. I highly doubt that the TD just got a hair up his ass and decided to target Rodney's family for the fun of it. If they were asked to leave then they were doing something to disturb the players or something that had the potential to disturb the players.

As a TD you may find it necassary to create a rule in the middle of a tournament. You can't have distraction. How else are you going to handle it?

What makes you think that any pool player who did bring his family to an event isn't taking it seriously? Do you honestly think that the player and his spouse don't know what they are doing when they make the decision to bring the children to the match?

I am 100% certain that if Rodney Morris' children were causing some commotion then the player who would be MOST affected and embarrassed would be Rodney.

Furthermore I am positive that EVERYONE in attendance with small children realizes the importance of the event and minds their children accordingly.

Yes, rules are written for a reason, and often it's the wrong reason. In any case this particular situation sounds like it COULD HAVE been handled with a lot more tact and class than to post a poorly written sign at the front door.

No one is questioning the promoter's or tournament director's right to make rules. It's HOW they go about it that doesn't seem to be too cool.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. I'm not against Rodney, I've met the guy and I really like him. He's a good person. But in a situation like this I gotta go with the TD. Rules are rules and you are responsible for finding out what those rules are.
