Romanique Pool Balls.

I’m in regular contact with a group of about one hundred pool ball collectors and between us we are only aware of six complete sets of Romanique I balls, just two of which are still in their original box.

I was wondering if any folks browsing the forum also own a set?

Related to which, I think Romanique II was used in the 1977 14.1 World Championship in Asbury Park. I think it was their introduction.

I remember (vaguely) seeing the balls before play started, but it could have been on the second day of 1976, after Hurricane Belle passed (with some excitement). Some of the 3s, 5s, and 7s had bulging eyes and I happened to have a ball gauge. They had enough sets to make four with round balls.

$375 plus shipping.

It’s an iconic design to collectors for sure, but if the balls are similar to other personalised sets I have seen from this outlet they will be cast in a polyester resin using surface sublimation so be aware of that before ordering.

I hope the players and commentators used the set to full effect. "I call the Vee Eye in the corner" "well if he can get to the Ex Eye for the break ball, it will be good for him".

This photograph by forum member bfriesth is possibly unique in capturing two complete Romanique I sets together… plus a Romanique II for good measure.

I don’t believe a similar image can be found anywhere online.

Steve Mizerak told me: "I had some Roman Numeral sets made for a tournament I organized. They had a unique design that was only made for that one tournament." He reiterated that he designed them himself and that he had about 5 of the sets left "sitting around somewhere." He was going to call me if he ever dug them up, but he passed before that happened. Bob, could he have been the one to organize that 1977 tournament? There is the rare set that looks like Romanique I, same color scheme but with traditional Arabic numerals. See attached.

Mizerak and Margo were the co-organizers of the 1977 World 14.1. It was supposed to have had 33k added money. There was no added money. On the other hand, there were no greens fees.
