This caught me by total surprise.

He plays a shot at 2:52 that just seems way aggressive for position. Two questions: Would anyone here play the shot the same way in a tournament or gambling situation? Do you know anyone who would?

Quite a f*cked up pattern, if you ask me. Almost like he was playing a completely different game. Maybe that's a common shot in Rotation?

Yeah, definitely not the first way I'd think to do things but those Filipinos...

What's amazing is that he was playing against Wu and doing it. Had he missed, he may have sat in his chair for a while.

I think most of the average players would have played or looked for a safe on the 2 ball. I have watched him play a lot and he seemed out of rhythm. (JMHO) I didn't understand the coming off the rail to make the 4 either but i guess we all play our own way right?

I may have played it that way if the 8 was completly stopping the draw shot and if I was dead straight so I couldn't follow.

That was a unique choice for sure. The tables were playing very soft so anything close to the pocket goes in like at 2:05. They show the replay of the two ball bank hitting the end rail before struggling into the corner pocket. I think he knew from that shot that the pockets were being generous and would accept anything close.

Sometimes the camera does not show how easy or how difficult a shot is in reality. The camera just doesn't capture everything you see with your eyes. It may not have been that difficult of a shot however it did look more difficult than just drawing the cue back into the middle of the table.

That shot looks like a good shot to work on to see if you can make it work for you. At least with the kick, you don't have to worry about the path of the cue ball. When you draw from that distance away, the cue ball sometimes takes on a path of its own. :o

The 4 ball wasn't real close to the pocket or the rail and to play a kick/cut shot in that situation is very aggressive and maybe too high risk for a shot in a tournament playing an opponent of Wu's caliber. It shocked me to see him play that shot....

A filipinos view...

As i looked at the video i see that the shot on the 4 was near straight in with a slight cut to the right to make the ball...it is possible to think he is straigh in. However i believe that he has a slight angle here to the right to make the ball...he is a mile away and if he draws back..he will most likely run into the 7 ball..or what ever that ball is back down table towards him to his left...

I like what he did here and makes sence to me...

those camera angles can make things look strange and unclear...

I must admit that i may be wrong in my viewing as well..but i do not think so...

I believe he shot it that way for a purpose- he was trying to hit the 6 afterwards and move it closer to the pocket. If he had done so, it would make the position off the 5 much easier.

I've done this myself a number of times. But you have to be sure of your ability to kick the ball in.

If you look at him close, you can see that he appears dissappointed that he missed hitting the six.

Too me, this is a little insight into top level thinking. Most think it was a bad move. But in reality, it was a very smart move.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't trying to run into the six.. that wouldn't be a very smart shot. He just hit the 4 a little too full coming off the rail and didn't get the cue down table as far as he wanted to.

He had to play it off the rail because he was almost straight in and a draw shot would have put him close to the rail behind the 7.

If you hit the 6 you run the very big risk of leaving a lot of distance between the cue and the 5-ball. I can't see him wanting that.

He had too much distance because he hit the ball poorly. He hit it too thick. Any thinner, he'd have split the pocket, missed the 6 completely and gotten closer to the 5.

Now surely with that in mind, you can't look at the video again and tell me he wanted to hit the 4-ball even *fuller* to bump the 6-ball... and effectively missing the pot on the 4, can you?

Neil said:
You think he didn't leave a lot of distance anyway? One more diamond wouldn't have mattered on making the 5, but the position on the 6 would have been automatic. JMHO

Well, I guess I disagree. I think it is a VERY smart shot. With the angle he had, he could have just followed it and come around two rails if he wanted to.

I don't think he could cheat the pocket enough to miss the top titty after coming off the side rail.

Too many goofy things can happen if you try to run into the six ball... a good player would never run that risk.

i'd still pocket the 4 and yes agressive to run out... but in a different way. I would not go rail first here. It's too risky imho

I think with a really powerful stroke you can pawn this in and bounce of the side rail and out! Just look at it in the video and pause, I think thats doable with a extrem pwoerful stroke.

OR.

if the 4 ball favoring the other side which is to the right slightly.. you can cheat the pocket to the left and bounce of the upper rail.

so, it depends on which of the sides is the 4 ball favoring.. if none which is extremly straight, I think its still doable for both ways to cheat a pocket. with a great stroke.. am i right?
