What happened to Ronnie Alcano? The guy comes here from the Phillipines and wins damn near every toury he enters including 5th place at the U.S. Open and then is never heard from again.

I was talking with his former backer about this a while ago. Apparently he was a bad seed. Great pool player, but shady as a human being.

He ended up being "funny with the money" he won , and also was prone to borrowing money from people and never repaying it.

Basically he was deemed a scumbag. So i think he was sent home...or passed off to another interested backer group. Who subsequently could not deal with him and sent him home. Plus there were some drug allegations.

The person i talked to said that the phillipino players all WARNED HIM to be careful with Ronnie, but he figured he'd try anyway. They were all telling him that he was bad news.

The Alcano story should remind us of a simple, but easily forgotten, truth:

NO MATTER HOW MUCH OR HOW OFTEN A PERSON WINS, THAT PERSON MAY STILL BE A LOSER

Sounds to me that the loss of Ronnie on American soil is no loss at all.

What a shame, this guy was really a fantastic player to watch. Can anyone tell me what states or better yet in what pool halls he did this stuff in?

Not a matter of WHERE. It was in general. No specific spot.
When he would get backed in a game, there were a few times where he cut the backer out, or wouldn't disclose ALL the sets he won. (If the backer gave him the money and went to the room to rest)
Say if he won 3...he'd only say he won 2 and pocket the rest. Or some other form of this scam.

Just little things like that here and there, and then the stiffing people when money was borrowed.

Flat out SHADY. So i guess they were tired of dealing with it. When your "responsible" for someone being here in the first place...and then they pull stunts like he did. It reflects on not just his character....but the character of the people who brought him here. Guess they just got tired of it.

I never had a problem backing Ronnie in money matches. I guess it's how the whole deal is handled. I did have a small complaint during the 2003 WPC, I wanted him to stay close to the team that he came with but ended up running around with Efren. It's understandable that Efren is his idol and he's trying to pick-up a lot of moves from him and being his chess playing partner but we weren't there for fun and games but rather for serious competition. Needless to say, he performed poorly.

I will try to get his side of the story on his US stint. But remember, I'm just going to be a messenger so don't flame me about nor hold me responsible for the info that I get from him.

Sounds good. There are always 2 sides to every story.

I does seem strange that he came here, and won LOTS of money, and then wouldn't return. There has to be SOME reason behind it.

But maybe we weren't meant to know the truth.

Nobody would suggest that Ronnie sold out every bakcer, but Superstroke has first-hand knowledge of the experience of at least some of Ronnie's backers, who have contended they were warned by Fillipinos not to get involved with him. If this is so, there's every reason to believe that Ronnie had probably been dishonest even prior to coming to the United States.

We're all interested in the other side of the story, if there is one, but every indication is that Ronnie has, more than once, proven himself a guy who can't be trusted. Thanks, Edwin, for following up, and, at least for now, we'll reserve judgement.

I heard fro Ed Young the cue maker that he over stayed his visa and they won't let him back in the US. I backed him in a game once and there was no problem. Just thought I would give my information, and to there being 2 sides of the story there is actully 3 the backers,Ronnie's and the truth.

This is exactly what I heard from Ronnie back when we were in Cardiff. He overstayed his visa but surrendered to the INS so that the problem won't get worst. What I'd like to find out from him is about backer problems aside from the one that wouldn't give him part of his accumulated percentage when he wanted to come home because his brother died after getting electrocuted in the construction site where he worked. I for one has "never" had a problem backing him or dealing with him to this day. I was actually just chatting with him the other night as he came over to where I was playing.

Hi EL'nino,

Contact the folks at Bristol Billiards in Bristol, Connecticut. It was my understanding that he was travelling and staying with George Texiera for the year. Also along for the ride was Santo Sambajon. They finally had to play each other so many times on the Joss Northeast Tour, they began travelling to competing tours on the same weekend. I heard all the stories posted here. None of my business but, its sad to loose such a potentially great player.

Save you the trouble. George is who i'm talking about when i talk about former backer.
Didn't want to mention his name, but then again...i didn't.

If i'm not mistaken. George is the one who sponsored Ronnie into this country in the first place.

I also heard that deportation talk, but that would be AFTER all the other stuff that was mentioned.

He'[s back in the Philippines playing bigtime money games and his backer is Manny Pacquiao. the Filipino boxing champion who is also fond of billiards. One time he even beat Efren playing rotation in one of the poolhalls here in Manila. He plays rotation very well and very few local players can match up to him.

How sad if the news about the stints in the US are true... Efren and Django aren't getting any younger you know

i also heard all the stories posted here. But i think and believe the reason he left was the visa problem. i believe also that rodolpho luat had the same problem with over staying and can only come here if it is by invitation to play. that is what he was telling fabio petroni 1 day a couple of years ago. fabio wanted him to play in a tournament in Fla i believe and luat told him he can only come by invirtation only...for what ever its worth,,,,,,,,,,,mike

This is the kind of thread that makes me uneasy to read. I don't know anything about Ronnie other than what I've read on this site. I'm not saying anyone is not telling the truth but wouldn't it be awful if some of this was not true? I mean you're talking about him and using his name and by doing that, you're dragging his name down and this goies out to a lot of people all over.

The facts/allegations in this thread were well known before this thread started. If the result of this thread is that Bandido will now seek Ronnie's side of the story and share it with us, the only result will be that we come to understand Ronnie's situation better, and that would be good for Ronnie.
