Ronnie Allen

I was trying to look it up. Is Ronnie in the BCA hof?
No. Ronnie Allen and others in his genre of pool may never be considered for the BCA Hall of Fame, mainly because the BCA Hall of Fame is more for tournament championship wins when it comes to pool players.

There are exceptions, however, for people like Minnesota Fats who's lifetime legacy of contributions to pool is noteworthy. He had a way of attracting mainstream America, especially with his antics versus Willie Mosconi. He was inducted in 1984 for "Meritorious Service."

Here's what the BCA says about Minnesota Fats: Perhaps the most recognizable figure in the history of pool, Rudolph "Minnesota Fats" Wanderone was elected to the Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service. Although he never actually won a designated "world championship," Wanderone, the game's leading comic, orator and publicity generator, has probably done more for the game in terms of sheer exposure than any other player. Initially nicknamed "Brooklyn Fats," and "New York Fats," Wanderone dubbed himself "Minnesota Fats" after the film version of "The Hustler" hit movie screens around the country in the early 1960's. Since that time he has become known around the world as pool's foremost side show. "Fats," whose exact age is a mystery, hosted a national television show, "Celebrity Billiards," during the 1960s. He stopped playing in tournaments around that time.

In my estimation Ronnie Allen like other players in his era peaked during the dark age of pool. For the most acute observers of the game now you have to have a strong tournament winning record to be included in a HOF vote which like others there just wasn't enough tournaments to get him there. Jimmy Mataya, Ronnie Allen and others in the 70s and 80s will never get the full respect that they deserve because the organized game was just that down. I will always hold him as one of the all time greats. I missed a chance to meet him in person but then again I had a new born at the time.

Fatty served a purpose, but let's be honest the fat one was a much better self promoter than he was ever a proven player. If the bloated one is in the hall of fame then let's be real and let Pretty boy Floyd, Ronnie, and Keith in.... hell lets make a power move and let Ed in to the hall of fame.

I’ve always suspected that Ronnie Allen was the best all-round player ever…..in his prime.
Maybe there needs to be a new category for those players of the game from that era. He may not have won a lot of big tournaments, but I guarantee he beat all those players who did. That's got to be good for something.

Ronnie beat some of the short stops who could win a tournament on a lucky day….playing even up one pocket shooting one hand to their two.

ronnie says
HAROLD WORST
the whole interview is a great listen to
Buddy Hall said Wimpy was the best 9-baller…Wimpy said Buddy was….their own mutual admiration society.
Ronnie adored Harold …..but Harold treated Ronnie like family…..they adored each other….but Harold didn’t live long enough.

Fatty was a good player…banks may’ve been his best game….but he did a lot for the game…he deserved his meritorious award.
And typically his HOF induction speech was terrific.

Quote Evelyn Wanderone.... Fats played his best from 1940-51. Dbl Smart was his phrase (great matchmaker) after that and for a short while his peers called em Triple Smart.

As a 20 collegiate finalist14.1 player, I saw Freddie play the first time at Janscos 69.
His mouth seemed to have more play time.
All this flash etc, being from his area I Knew he could not beat me in straight pool.... period.
So I chose to not like him :) a braggadocio.
But my mistake, I thought pool was the greatest Sport/Mosconi era.
I forgot it was a Gamblers life.
Miscue :).
Being an athlete/Olympic time trials kid.... then seeing his public manner at time, I didn't enjoy, bad for the sport.
But as a kid..... I had no idea the scam he was working from yr to yr making games/good one$$$$s WHOOFING. Barking.
