Room Owners- I need your help

I am currently working on my Masters in business. The class I am currently taking is marketing and advertising. We are required to do a marketing analysis and advertising plan for a product or business. I have decided to do it on one of my local pool halls that I have played in for years. In order to do this project to the best of my ability i'm going to need some outside sources and help on certain issues. Lets hear these Idea's here,not like your teacher or instructor is going to be on here.This way EVERYONE can give you some idea's.
 
My ideas aren't anything that someone with common sense wouldnt think of. The pool hall i'm going to do my project on is stuck in the stone age and the owner, who is a hell of a nice guy, isnt exactly interested in updating alot of things. For example, he doesnt have a credit card machine in there, and from working in bars for several years i know that having a credit card machine boost register rings by as much as 30-35%. His liquor prices are $1-1.50 cheaper than everyplace else, even the hell holes, so i would do a minute raise in the price of liquor. In terms of pool, for a while this pool hall had the best friday night tournament in Columbus, OH. When the previous manager quit for a normal job, the tournament fell apart and now they dont even have one. I would start 2-3 tournaments a week (9-ball on the 9 footers and 8 ball on the bar boxes atleast). Since he can afford to, i would have a high pay back tournament with atleast 150-200% added, a big break and run that I would start out $300 so it doenst take forever to build up and put all my emphasis on bringing players from other pools hall in there, even if its only twice a week or so. As for the equipment, he has 5 bar boxes, 8 8-footers, 5 9-footers and a snooker table. I would personally get rid of the 8 footers and add one more bar box and fill the rest up with 9 footers. The snooker table would stay since this pool hall gets all of the golf action in Columbus for the most part. These are just a few of the preliminary ideas I have. Any criticism or thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
 
you might also want to copy your post to the room owner's forum. Probably most room owners read both that forum and this one... but that forum is a lot less crowded so your post is more likely to get seen.

Your project sounds excellent, our local pool hall has some issues too but the owner is always trying new stuff. I'm in touch with him daily so I can ask him whatever. Maybe post the 'certain issues' you want help with so I can have specific questions for him later? Or pm them to me.

I dunno about other places but his table mix is weird. It's probably a bit late to change it but I've never been in a pool hall that mixed 8 and 9 footers. Maybe I just need to get out more.

I'd get rid of several bar boxes, they bring in less than full sized tables since most of their business comes from people who take 20 minutes to get through a game of 8 ball. 3 bucks an hour from a bar table isn't worth it. I say ditch 2 of the bar tables in favor of a 9 footer. Also, what's he charge for table time? We're 8/hr around here.

I mean, charging that much how can a guy afford to keep up decent 9 footers with simonis and good rails? He must be dealing crack on the side >_<

I wouldnt even think of getting rid of one bar box, in fact, if it were up to me i might add two more. Bar box tournaments are a big item here and if you dont have a decent amount of bar boxes to get through a nice sized tournament in a reasonable amount of time, then the good players (who we all know draw other players in) wont show up. Eventually I would like to have atleast 8 bar boxes and run an amazing Friday night tournament with big pay outs, an awesome calcutta and a large field. I have seen these types of tournaments do well and bring in a lot of business.
 
A room in the area has a weekly drawing during the Thursday night tournament for a 9-ball break and run. The value of each ball pocketed depends on the amount in the kitty. Some weeks each ball is worth $25.00. I think it got as high as $100.00 - $200.00 a ball. Seems to draw a lot of people.

Some nights the ticket holder made nothing on the break other nights the holder might run five or six balls.

The rules say that one must play in at least two tournaments before being eligible to buy a $5.00 ticket in the drawing.
 
wow, y'all have neat pool halls. I've been in a pool hall that has a weekly drawing to try to snap the 9 on the break, and everyone gets a crack at it for free.

Not sure if I understand this - if you get rid of bar tables, the better players won't want to come? Your better players prefer bar tables? Because you run tournaments for bar boxes only (rather than regular tournaments on any available table)?

That's another one I haven't seen. We have bar box tournaments in the area but they're held at actual bars where a 9 footer is not a choice. When there's a choice, we use the big tables for tournaments. Do you figure people like bar table tournaments because the table is less scary for amateurs?

I got PMed that there's a place charging a buck fifty for table time too. I guess the area really makes a big difference on the policy. Our owner is just getting by charging 5 times that. He can't sell anything heavier than beer though, that may be the difference.
