Rough patch on my linen wrap

I was playing in a tournament today and as I reached back on a shot, I felt a rough patch on my linen wrap. It's only in the bottom inch or two of the wrap, the rest of the wrap is in great shape.

I've had this wrap for 10 or so years and it gets a decent amount of use. I looked at it real close and could not see any sort of fraying...you can only feel it so I can't really get a photo of the problem.

Any ideas? Think is just needs a pressing or more than likely a new wrap will be called for?

Take the cue to your local cue repairman, there is really no way to say for certain what it will require the worst will be a re-wrap if something has come loose, the best with be a cleaning and a press.

That's the problem...there are no local repair people in my area. The Boston area is a little light on cuemakers. There are some guys that do tips and such, but no one I would trust with anything else.

I might send a PM to Mike Webb or Tony Zinzola, they are the only guys within an hour drive from my place.

I think it would well be worth the trip, either one of those guy's could certainly take care of the problem you described, most likely while you wait if you called ahead and told them you were coming. I mean to replace a wrap only take about 30 minutes, and to press one much less time than that.

In a pinch...just to smooth it a bit until you get it corrected. Try folding up a large square of wax paper...fold wax side out. Then rub the paper rather briskly on your wrap. Won't hurt to do the entire wrap. Don't worry about harming the clear either as any wax residue will wipe right off. If you rub it enough then the wax will heat up & transfer to the linen making it feel much smoother. Thats about the only tip I can offer a man with no lathe access. Hope this helps. :)

It amazes me that people screw around with linen wraps when they are so easy and cheap to replace.

Send it to a cuemaker or repair location and have it rewraped and be done with it.

Ten years later send it off again...;)

Thank you, if you wish me to save the wrap, I prefer if you don't use anything on it, it just makes my job tougher.

I hear you on the "cheap to replace"...but after ten years it felt like it was just about perfect condition. IMO, linen wraps take some time to break in and get to where you like them. If I can repair this and not have to break in a new wrap that would be ideal. Money is not an issue in this case.
 
Call Mike. His linen wraps look and feel the best out of any I have ever seen. He's probably a bit closer to you than I am too.
 
I had the pleasure of meeting with Mike Webb this morning and can't tell you how impressed I was with him and his work. He cleaned and pressed my wrap and it honestly looks & feels better than it did 10 years ago when I sent it out to Joss for a brand new wrap.

He also took the time to give me the tour of his shop and some of his work-in-progress, which was a really nice bonus. I can't recommend Mike enough...he is a great guy to meet if you ever have the oppurtunity.
