Many benefits to this, wonder who was the first company that came out with it. How long has it been in use? Perhaps when applied to Simonis it would dampen the Smart table pinball action and provide better wear. Also referred to as canvas backed........

The 1939 Brunswick catalog has it, and it was not advertised as a new product at that time.

"Canvas Back" was my ring name when I use to box many, many moons ago. Sorry, the devil made me say it. Johnnyt

It's called a rayon backing, glued to the surface cloth. Traps dirt, miscue's are mole hills, and is loose as hell when it comes unglued from the rayon backing. Mechanics instead of buying separate rail cloth that had no glue residue on it, would just strip the backing off the cloth and use that for rail cloth...later on..the glue residue ATE the cushion rubber...and melted it. Simonis has already been there, done that...and will never do it again;)

When did Simonis try this? what happened? did it improve the divot problem? did it improve the ball burn problem? did it play slower? did it last longer? what kind of trials did they do?

Did they actually do trials???? how many tables did they test? for what length of time? etc

If adding a backing improved their cloth then they would be selling it don't you think?
Here we go again, LOL.

so then, it did not have positive results at the time.......(smart table not out yet) Maybe it played slower and thats what I'm thinking would be good for smart tables

maybe it lasted too long and then they wouldn't sell more cloth

maybe they found out that it played just as good and lasted longer without divots,
geese if a company found out that their product was going to last twice as long that would be a 50% loss.......

good point

Backed cloth has its uses.
Consider that cloth is not stretched to the same extent (as a regular install) when the backing is applied to the roll
so it inherently will be a bit slower. Changing to a slower cloth will slow the roll on a smart table (duh).

And FTR - a banger can do the same damage on backed or unbacked cloth.

In my opinion the 7-footers play fine. If you want your Diamonds to play slower use Titan. If you use Titan though your smart tables won't make as much money.

I recovered some Pyramid tables in LA. The owner used Simonis but thought it was too fast. He actually bought rayon from the fabric store and insisted I but it on the before the Simonis. I did this a few times before refusing. run with it.

What happened to the OTLB school of R&D?:D You're going to have to figure this one out on your own buddy, I'm keeping what I know as a secret....so lets see if you come up with the same results as I have;)

I knew it was only a matter of time before you started posting on AZ again;)

Yes, I am doing trials in the field as we speak. Many of them, thank you very much!

Don't have any with backed cloth but maybe I can get some 860 backed and test, will be interesting.........

I use to take all the backed cloth off tables I recovered and sell the bed cloths to painters for drop cloth, that's when I finally found the real calling of backed cloth;)

yeah it probably lasted too long and you can't make money covering tables if the cloth looks good and isn't full of divots and ball burn marks, LOL

Your probably right, I'd suggest you try some backed cloth on them Diamonds you've got, make sure you peel off the backing on the rail cloth before you try installing the cloth on the rails or you'll never get it on;)

You're going to drop being a table mechanic....and start painting houses for a living?:D

can hear it now, On The Level Painting "shades above the rest".

Its not that though, you should think about what you say, sometimes you might come up with an idea like the one s you just gave me.

In fact, now that I'm thinking about it more it makes sense, since I did speak with another mech in here about this very topic. Oh well, another thread on my list someday.
