Always been a foul as long as i've played.Do you a reference? A rule number or page?
To plumb bob with your putter, you still have to hold the golf club so your hand has to contact the club.I think the player should be able to use his hands, arms, and cue to line up shots in any way he chooses.
Players sometimes measure the distance of a ball from a cushion with their cue and then form the mirror image on the other side of the nose of the rail. Should that be illegal? Players sometimes line the cue up with diamonds to find the 2:1 simple kicking ratio. Should that be illegal? Players sometimes place their cue tip on the cloth in the "inch and an eighth" position. Should that be illegal? Players sometimes hold the stick over the object ball and on the line to the pocket so they can more easily visualize the tangent line off the OB. Should that be illegal?
Golfers sometimes use their putters as plumb bobs. Is that forbidden? Should it be? A club is not built or intended to be a plumb bob.
I agree that this is a foul, if the cue it laid down on the table. The other side of this is that some people will try to call a foul if you set the cue down just to go get a jump cue.
you cannot take your hand off it and have it on the tableYou are allowed to use your cue as a pointing device, you are not allowed to use it as a measuring device.

That is why you carry your cue to its resting place and pick up the jump stick from its resting place in one move.
You all are forgetting about the part in those rules that says “use his cue stick to align a shot…” It isn’t a foul, under those rules, to lay your stick on the table to go get an extension.you cannot take your hand off it and have it on the table

The BCA rules referenced the WPA rules, you cant let go of the cue. The BCAPL/CSI rules say your hand does not need to be held. That must be a recent change, I generally review the rules periodically and have never seen where you can let go of the cue.Gonna depend on what rules you play by. One rule book very recently, last year or so, made it legal. I think BCA but I have just read about it a few times on here. If you do a search on here you can probably get better details. Try Bob Jewett as the user in an advanced search, I'm pretty sure he was in some of those threads.
