Rules & Etiquette in Competition

You know since this thread addresses some rules and some etiquette......I was a bit surprised that I did not see this brought up.......The following actually tends to bug me more than my own opponents actions.

I find quite often that other players become oblivious to their surroundings.....Frequently tables are within proximity to each other...I find it annoying when your down on a shot and right as you are about to pull the trigger on that key shot...someone gets down on a shot on the next table over and sticks his ASS right in your line of site...OR you have an easy routine shot to make and your next table over player is in a quandry of what he wants to do, but instead of letting you shoot your shot while he calculates his blunder...he stands thier with hand on chin...

Regarding the player that was shooting balls on a neighboring table....not only is he distracting to his own match....Usually they are taking flyer shots or banking balls at mach 7...completly oblivious to the fact that there is "another" match on the next table over...

Annoying...

I think what he meant was if you're taking a break on your turn, everyone has to wait. If you take a break on your opponent's turn, your opponent can keep shooting and you might be back before it's your turn again, thus not making anyone wait. This is usually what I do in playing for fun situations. In a match, I go between racks.

No. I mean a formal break. I mean when play is suspended. You do it when it's your turn. I can't think of any place where the opposite would be appropriate.

Well, the reason why it probably wasn't mentioned is because there is little relevance to a foul call scenario. You're not going to lose the game because you didn't let your neighbor shoot first. He's just going to think you're an ass and move on.

All good points. I think "don't reach for your water" it a bit on the excessive side. During our APA action, there are often 8 ppl watching the match. They are certainly all not going to sit still while you play.

Regarding behavior, how do you guys treat the quick '2 seconds of coaching' for you when the other guy just shot and the balls are rolling to a stop?

As expected, one thing I REALLY HATE is when some pals show up and go to talk to the other player/team and make noise, they have the least respect. Oh, then drunks stumbling though the area too. Challenges!!

On a couple of occasions I have had to inform the opposing captain about people that are with their team, but not on their team. One of the friends shows up, and while the player is shooting they are commenting things to them like "Nice leave on the 5 ball." I told the captains that it's their job to control those people, and if they don't I'm calling a coaching foul.

That also goes with having too many people around the match table. I have had to tell the captains to make sure to keep their "extra people" away from the match tables. I always figure it is the offending captains job to keep control. Not just of their players, but also any other people that are there with their team.

Obviously, an APA match is a little less formal than what I'm referring to. In fact, I would have to say the APA bar match is probably the least formal of all organized competition. It's practically a free for all on etiquette since there is no referee present.

If you're playing in a Joss tournament or in BCA Singles in Vegas and you're sitting in your opponent's line of sight and you reach for your water while he is down on a shot, it's unsportsmanlike.

If you're reaching for your beer during your APA match, your opponent is liable to get up and say "Wow, great idea. Let me go get mine and I'll just rest it in the pocket." Seriously, he will think he's brilliant.

With some of my sparring partners it's a foul if your cellphone rings during the match and loss of game if you answer it.

Unsportsmanlike conduct? Yes, it can be ruled as a foul, loss of game or a loss of match. No, reaching for your water once is not going to net a foul but yes, it CAN if you are deliberately doing it to shark your opponent.

I think you got my point...If not and you wish to take a hard lined stance...fine...but if that is the case you should probably Re-Title the thread and remove the words "& Ettiquette"......Since Ettiquitte in formal play goes beyond just your opponent or just your match...

I've never heard of a "formal break" during a league. How does that work? Makes more sense to me to smoke before or after a match and use the toilet when your opponent is at the table so you don't hold up the show.

I also disagree that nobody should take a drink if somebody is shooting. The room owner wouldn't sell many drinks if that was the rule. In the leagues I've played in those rules are not realistic. Can more than one match be played at the same time or is it too much of a distraction to have other players moving around the table at the same time? Or do you take turns, everybody freezes while table one shoots, then you move to table two, etc?

Yes, if you're in a completely casual setting then etiquette discussion is kind of silly, isn't it? Perhaps you can find a new thread to discuss this.

If I notice the player on the next table is shooting a shot and I am about to move into their shot line, I will stop and let them shoot before I go to my next shot. It IS the courteous thing to do.

First, it's about what they do when a player is down on a shot, particularly, in their line of vision. Second, just because Corey does it, doesn't make it right.

Non-shark example: sneaking a bite or a drink in while your opponent is examining the table or facing away from you.

Shark example: ignoring your beverage while your opponent runs balls 1 through 8, and then grabbing for your water while your opponent is down on the shot towards the pocket that you're next to, shooting at 9-ball.

Also, some of those TV table setups have a lot more space between the players' chairs and the table than some pool rooms do.

It's not about being anal. Why do you think that people wave those thingies at basketball games when free throws are being shot? If we want pool to be that way, fine, I'll go buy a thingy to keep in my case; otherwise, some reasonable etiquette by both players should be expected.
