Rules Question

Per the rule - which is wrong.

I admit that I always chuckle when people say that a rule is "wrong".

What that inevitably means is that they simply don't like that particular rule.

The rules are neither right nor wrong. They aren't there to either help or hinder us.

They're just there to tell us how to play the game and to ensure that everybody plays it the same way given the same circumstances.

I already said the rule is stupid. Moot since I'm not involved in sanctioned/organized play. Rules are wrong when they impede play. Checking for fit is a requirement of pool. Relegating that kind of thoroughness to illegal procedure is more ruling class monkey training.
If pool was played just based on opinions it would be a farce. Lobby to have it changed. good luck with that. hell, i don't like snooker's chicken-shit no rail foul rule and flukes/shit shots counting but guess what? those are the rules.
Everything is done and "advanced", based on opinions. Just saying the motivations are based on profit and not, common sense. The sports fan learns to keep struggling at play and more importantly, at work.

That whole "gotta hit the lowest numbered ball first" when playing rotation is wrong because it impedes play...

Yeah, no.

The rules tell us how a game is to be played. That's all.

If someone wants to play a different game, that's fine too... 👍

This is interesting, I know you can’t use a ball to check for clearance but I didn’t realize you weren’t allowed to use your body….I’ve often used three fingers wide as the width of a ball to check for clearance…guess I need to stop doing that.

In my view any way you want to use your cue stick and arms/hands/eyes to plan and align shots should be perfectly OK.

A fairly common kicking system requires you to shoot towards a point that is the mirror image of the object ball reflected through the cushion. There are lots of YouTube examples of players measuring out the right distance to go on the other side of the cushion with either their hand or the cue stick. I have never seen a foul called for such a thing.

I also think that if you have the cue ball in hand you should be able to place it wherever you please for any purpose you have.

I agree with all that.

I don't think you should be able to take a pocketed ball out to measure, but if you already have ball in hand it's a weird grey area and just seems easier to let the player do that....though I will say that is one I have refrained from doing myself because of the rules.

I too see players use their cue to measure those angles all the time, that seems to be a pretty accepted practice.

I thought about that when this thread started as well, and I think the distinction is in those systems you are determining an aim point (which is legal), not measuring clearance (which is a foul).

I lean the same way about that - but it doesn't mean sighting a ball's direction of travel is the same as measuring clearance for it.

It is if you need to clear something and besides, be it the beginning of the rack or the last ball on the table, using the peace sign is a declaration to check tolerance. :p
