THIS HAPPENED LAST NIGHT IN SAVANAH...(SOUTHEAST TOUR). TK WAS PLAYING A MATCH WHEN HIS OPPONENT MADE A BALL, WHILE THE CUE BALL CAME AROUND AND LANDED ON THE EDGE OF THE POCKET, HE GETS DOWN FOR THE NEXT SHOT WHEN THE CUE BALL DROPS IN THE HOLE AFTER 5 SECONDS. SO...IS THE CUE BALL REPLACED TO THE SAME SPOT LIKE AN OBJECT BALL?, OR IS IT A SCRATCH? I KNOW THE ANSWER, I WANT TO SEE WHAT YOU THINK. REMEMBER, THIS IS TEXAS EXPRESS.:thumbup:

I didn't know that, thanks for the info. But I'm not sure I understand what it means to "write the Texas Express rules".

This article in Wikipedia seems to say that the "Texas Express Rules" are actually just a handful of rule changes, mostly replacing the old pushout-at-any-time rule with the one-pushout-per-rack rule, and that the other rules remained pretty much the same as they were (and are today).

If that's the case, then "the rules" do cover this spontaneous-ball-dropping situation (the "5-second" rule), but I don't know if it was one of the handful of "Texas Express" changes or if it came along before or after the Texas Express changes.

I'd be interested to hear the history and extent of the Texas Express changes from somebody who's familiar with it - would that be Randy?

John McChesney, Robin Adair and Randy Goettlicher were partners of the Texas Express Promotions Group. That group wrote and re-wrote the Texas Express 9-Ball Rules. This group is responsible for the first National Pool Tour.

First came the Texas Express 9-Ball Tour, then the Mcdermott National 9-ball Tour. These tours produced about 140 tournaments annualy with a huge season end tournament. This lasted for about 15 years.

At the same time Randy was a member of the BCA Rules Committee. With Randy's leadership. the Texas Express Group gave the BCA permission to use the 9-Ball rules in their BCA Rule Book........SPF=randyg

Randy, this is something I've always wondered about. Could you remark on this Wikipedia article that describes "the rise of Texas Express" and tell us what's right and wrong with their description? I know they get things wrong sometimes and would appreciate any clarification you can offer.

In particular, can you tell us whether Texas Express Rules were a complete independent set of rules or some key rule changes that were incorporated into an existing ruleset? Did BCA have a ruleset before Texas Express?

Here's one of the "Texas Express Official 9-Ball Rules" posted at various locations online. Is it a valid "Texas Express" ruleset? [By the way, I found the "replace the ball" rule in these rules - so I was wrong that it isn't covered - sorry about that.]

I'm not trying to minimize the importance of Texas Express, which was clearly a major force in modernizing the game of 9-ball, just trying to reduce my own ignorance about this.

To the best of my knowledge, the Texas Express rules never appeared in the BCA rule book. Do you know about what year this may have been? The BCA did republish the PBA/MPBA rules from 1987 as the "pro" rules of nine ball along with the "amateur" rules, but I don't recall the TE rules in there.

The answer is re-position the cue ball, and it is not covered in TE rules. However, it is in BCA rules.:wink:

Hi Bob

Our BCA Rules Committee never called them TE Rules, just BCA 9-ball rules. It was the first major change to the BCA 9-ball rules in years.....randyg

BOTH. Not many things seems to be original. In part. our rules are certainly a composite from many local and National tournament directors.

In the early 80's the TE Group streamlined a set of established 9-ball rules. Over the next two years many changes came about. By 1986 we had a very nice set of TE Rules on paper. Every year our trio would review the rules. We have several original additions that I dearly love, as a TD.

Yes, of course. The BCA had the old two shot push out rules, all balls spot.

you should always be careful about citing wikipedia as a source for accurate info since anyone can summit or edit info what you find there is not always completely factual.

apparently you do not "know" the answer since you say put the ball back, then say it is not covered in texas express rules, but one of the persons who wrote the rules already answered your "question" and then pj said he found the answer in te rules. makes me wonder what you do know? and if you read any of your own thread?

if you are going to replace it, ideally youd have an impartial party replace it.

alternatively, the word express indicates quick, so if it falls in perhaps ball in hand should be awarded so the next guy can promplty run out?? :)
