Running a 5 pack in 9-ball

Great shooting Alex! VERY much improved fundamentals from the last time I saw him play, Lazar! Still has a few things to learn that could make him even better. I hope he has learned to deal with the personal anger issues that we talked about a few years ago. Has Alex aged out of the Jr. Nationals? Again...great play Alex! Thanks for sharing!

I think that is the right model, we got it free from Craigslist a few years ago, from someone in the Cape Cod area, who had it in his garage never setup, who got it from a friend of his. So this may very well be your old table.

I had the pleasure playing some practice scotch doubles against you and your son with Mitch as my partner approx 6 months months ago. It was a lot of fun and very competitive.

It's nice to see Alex running a 5 pack and to me it doesn't matter too much that it was done using a template rack with medium breaks. The guy shooting still has to get position on all next balls and actually pot them. ;)

I'll go to the pool hall later today with my magic rack and I'm confident that I'm in no danger of running 5 racks. Or even 4. :o But I will try.

See, to me, your post makes since.

I'm talking about the magic rack, soft break etc...etc... not being a problem.

I hear most everyone IRL and on here say, "oh, but, but, he used a magic rack, the 1 and the 2 was always in same place".....lol

It takes skill to do that. It takes a "touch" coupled with ....."practice" to learn the break and yes, even how to rack.

After ALL THAT...^^^^^^^^^.......like you said, "all the other balls" still have to be pocketed.

It's a little easier, yes but, most still can't do it but, lol...those same "many" that can't do it like to give chit to people that can.

I dont get it.

If I see a PRO using a template...lol....yeah, sure.... I'm like....get the triangle but, EVERYONE ELSE on the planet, in my opinion, can by all means:

Use a template
Soft break
...hell......even pattern rack till you dont need to.

Yep^^^^^^^ all that should be ok until you step in the box with the big boys. Even then, its 9k becaus THEY.....the PROS do the same chit all the time.

My hats off to the young man. I hope he NEVER stops playing!

Watched this again. I was struck by how consistent he was as he lined up and shot ball after ball. Not easy!

I didn't knock the kid, he can play.
Nor did I accuse him of pattern racking.

When you make the wing ball and the one floats down table with shape on the 2, how far out do you want to carry this?

Throw out 90 years of pool because it didn't count with a wood rack?
The new era is here, and some top pros do it that way so everyone should?

I don't want to learn "touch" with a soft or medium break, and I certainly don't want to learn how to rack. Rack the balls and play.

Very nice shooting. I noticed that on the shot you finally missed, you had just the right speed.

Have you tried 14.1 yet? It will help you deal with clusters.

I guess I can reply for him, he is too busy with video games to check forums for replies hehe.

His high run in 14.1 is in the 4 rack range, but when we play I don't think either of us get past a dozen most days, maybe 20.

Still banging cues and tables when losing, even when playing well. I think that is common to way too many kids these days due to instant gratification and video game raging. Things just don't take time now, so kids expect everything to be instant, even perfect pool playing.

His last Jr Nationals was in 2017, the one he tied for 5th place in. He actually had the eventual winner down 6-4 or 6-3 in a race to 7 but missed a few 9 balls and had late scratches to let him in the set and beat him.

Watching him play, I'm fairly certain he would play well with or without the template/soft break. He's a player and it only stands to reason that he will continue to improve as he ages and gains experience. I wouldn't play him for money without him giving me something that's for sure. Great shooting kid.

I'd like to see Alex try a big package on a 9ft Diamond.

Don't see many 4-5 packs by pros.

My post was not directed toward you. As a matter of fact, it wasn't directed toward "any one" person.

Look, it's like this:

I use to put vids up all the time. 9 ball, 10 ball, 14.1 etc...etc.

Some of those vids were template, BIH after break etc....

Some of them were triangle with BIH....etc...

Some, very few of them were NO BIH after break, on a 9' pro-am and wooden rack.

I lost some, won some.

Guess what?, I caught all kinds of chit simply because the 1 and 2 ball consistently went to same area.

To me, that's good pool. Others call it pattern racking.

I put a 7 pack together on a 9' pro-am but it got dissed because I took BIH and the 1 and 2 was consistent after break.

After catching crapp I dug up TONS of vids of top tier pros doing the same thing but, guess what?, lol.....nobody's calling them out for taking BIH .....and......pattern racking, even though, I wasn't pattern racking. It just looked like I was.

I can, like most....pattern rack but, like some, I don't "have to". It's just another tool in the box.

The pros pattern rack ALL THE TIME. They are much more likely to do it than someone like you or myself.

For me you have two levels. Running racks in a match or in practice. In practice is always slightly less impressive but that’s slightly off of a big piece of impress. In practice, whether using templates, triangle, soft break, BIH after, whatever..you’re basically showing abouts what you could do in a match if everything was going your way and you were breaking really well.

Breaking really well and doing all this under pressure is another set of skills.

I liked it and I wish I had a sparring partner that speed who lived in the same house. I’m jelly
