OK, Dennis and Stu. I played around with the second ball and corner ball safeties from behind the rack. I find that I get balls opening up on both sides of the rack either way. In fact, I was unable to get balls to move out on only one side of the rack with the second ball safety no matter what angle I tried. Am I understanding this right? Is this safety dependent on the table? Is the concept of "second ball safes move one side while corner ball safes move both sides" incorrect?
Thanks.
Based on your diagram in Post 15 of this thread, Dan, Safety A (which is the second ball safety from behind the rack) struck correctly should leave the cue against the four ball and should send the eleven ball to the rail, leaving the remainder of the rack largely undisturbed. If you are unable to accomplish this from that position, you need to work on it. Struck correctly, this safety creates just one threat.
As Bob Jewett points out, if the rack has already been disturbed, there are more things to consider.
