From her article:

However, one of my least favorite things about experiencing dead stroke is that after it’s over, I don’t remember a thing. I can’t remember the super runs I made or how it felt when I made them. The other thing I find myself doing is getting careless. When you feel like you can make anything from anywhere, you forget that you should still try to play position. I find myself making the shots but getting into much more trouble.

I think Dead Stroke and In Stroke are basically synonyms. One could make the argument that they are different, but it's irrelevant in my opinion. The Zone, Dead Stroke, In Stroke, Unconscious, On Fire, or what ever you want to call it is the ultimate goal.

If you're Dead Stroke you're not getting out of line. If you're getting careless, you're not in Dead Stroke anymore. If your conscience mind has a greater influence on your game then the subconscious, you are most likely not in Dead Stroke.

I understand what she means about not remembering a thing because you're playing in the moment. Every shot is made one at a time and demands your most intense focus. You're living moment to moment during the match. So what if you don't remember all the details, thats the price you pay for being in Dead Stroke. If you really want to remember it, video tape it.

Actually, I think you remember the important shots better and probably forget the easier, routine shots. Thats the way I want it personally.

To me, her argument is like saying I want to play in the World Series and want to watch the game from 3rd base line seats at the same time.

IMO.... "deadstroke", "the zone", "unconscious" all happen when your
"back brain" takes a drive to the land without words, where pure thought occurs.... you just see, and know, and feel. Heaven for a pool player, and we all get kicked out soon enough only to try and get back there for the rest of our earthly days........:grin-square:

I think there is a difference between being in stroke and being in dead stroke.

To me, being in stroke means that your shot conceptualization, pre-shot routine, stroke mechanics and playing rhythm are where they should be to produce efficient, if not stellar, execution of your game.

When you start to execute at a level that you very rarely attain, you find a unique, and almost priceless, psychological calm that allows you to continue executing at that level for a while. Even though you may, marginally, let your guard down in terms of your shot conceptualization and the execution of your stroke, your inner calm and supreme confidence more than compensate for it. You are almost on automatic pilot, riding a wave of success you are able to obtain only on the most special of occasions. That, to me, is dead stroke.

I'm with Samm on this. When this rare level of "dead stroke" performance is reached, it can end with a sense of bewilderment, in which little can be recalled about how the level was attained or might be attained again.

Okay, I will concede on this one. Dead Stroke is a probably a higher/different level than In Stoke.
