Samm Diep's Provision column on Nick Varner

Nice work Samm!! Nick is such a cool guy! He's a great pool player and a class act. He's my favorite pro of all time... him and Buddy. They (in my experience) treat people really good.

Great work Samm. Through the years, if more pro's had the class, work ethic, and integrity of Nick Varner, the game would be very different than it is today.

Mike,

Thanks for bringing attention to this column. I really enjoyed the read!
I look forward to future PROvision columns. Great job Samm!

Below are a couple key items that are really going to stick with me:

1. "One key thought that I've always had: I try not to look up on every shot. I try to always see the cue ball hit that object ball. That's really served me well. That's hard to do. You still once in a while will jump up and make a pathetic stroke under pressure. I try to eliminate that as much as humanly possible. It's easy to see the cue ball hit the object ball one time, and maybe do it two times in a row, but eight times in a row... it's hard to keep that concentration. Thoughts come into your mind at the wrong time, like close to when you're ready to pull the trigger, that maybe don't have anything to do with the shot. You're maybe thinking of winning of losing. The best thing to do then is to get back up and get refocused..."

2. "The head moves a little bit in golf but they always tell you to keep your head down. Pool is really about the same as golf when it comes to that. The less movement of the head, the better off you are."

Thank you Mr. Varner for taking the time to allow your fans to get to know you. I especially liked the read on concentration.

Best Regards, :)

Thanks -I was just about to ask what a provision column is.

Thanks, everyone! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was an honor interviewing Nick and he is WAY too humble. I really learned a lot myself from this one.
