When useing an automotive clear (PPG) is there a sanding sealer that should or could be used?

Yes there is a sanding sealer that you can use before spraying clear. I dont remember what the name of it is because the label is off of my can! I think minwax makes one that you can use.

Denny, some also use epoxy as a sealer alternative, but I agree with Doug, Minwax does make a sanding sealer you can use.

Good Luck

Makes a huge diferrence for me! I always use a sealer first then I spray. I also probably sand 75% of it back off!

Using a sanding sealer will allow you to shoot less top-coat and may also help reduce the 'pinch-down' effect that accompanies the clear-coat.
The sealer will go a long way to fill the pores of the wood.
It's use will also tell you if you've got all your sanding marks removed before the clear goes on.

I'm spraying Deltron PPG DC3000. Just 2 to 4 minutes between coats. I never used to seal before and and I was getting sinks where the finish would soak into the wood grain. I now seal with Atlas finish cure 20 minute epoxy QGLUE AEPXF13. The stuff is real runny, not like 5 minute epoxy. I spread it on with my finger wearing a rubber glove and turning my lathe by hand. I have a piece of plastic channel I put over my lathe bed becuse the sealer drips. Let it soak in a few minutes then wipe it all back off. Let it sit for 4 hours, hit it with 600 grit and do it a 2nd time. The second time makes a big difference. Let it sit over night, hit it again with 600 grit, then spray. I haven't had to spray a cue twice since I started sealing twice.

A good rule of thumb when using catalized finishes and sealers. Most single part sealers will not allow a catalized finish to adhere like it should. It is also true for the reverse. I imagine this is not true for all finishes but the combinations I have tried over the last 10 years this has been the case.
