Sanding

I want to build a down draft sanding station. Any ideas. Thanks.

Depends on what you want to sand and how far away from the sanding table the work would be. It takes a pretty large impeller to create much suction over an open area.

I would like an area for butts and shafts. My son loves working with me. He is 16 put still has his fight with asthma. He has a good mask. I would like to get it better.

An old furnace blower motor and a couple of hypo-Allergenic "edit" filters buid ya a base and suck away. I made a dust filter for the shop like this. moves a lot of air.

John, as we all know, the trick is to remove the dust from the air, and leave the A/C, or Heat in the building, by all means the filer shouls be a high-end one that will get the bad stuff, and leave your shop at a workable tempture. Never put your wood close to a door, entrance, window, or heater or air conditioner and or a return duct..

CD,

Be prepared to read, ALOT!

We make a tremendous amount of dust in manufacturing the OB-1 cue shafts, and I am currently using the information I learned from reading this site to completely upgrade our dust collection systems.

The trouble dust is the small stuff, and you can't just filter it out. Well, you can, but this small dust will plug any good filters very fast. The only way to effectively control it is to remove it from the air before it gets to your filters.

I am currenty waiting on a new collector built to these specifications. If the smaller test cylcone sent to me is any indication, I will control 95% of dust particles down to .5 microns.

You should really take a look at this stuff for yourself too. Wood dust is bad can cause problems, and you should take steps to take care of it before it gets that bad.

Thanks, Royce, great infomation. We need more in-put from folks as you. Don't know if you remember, I had a bad bout with lungs and vocial cords about a year ago, because of the paint and dust. See you in Valley forge, are you coming to the awards ceramony?

Dust Control

Check out Grizzley's web site on dust control. They have a good selection of
down draft tables and dust control systems. I have purchased several of
these items from them and they work well.

Down draft table with lathe for sanding, polishing, wrapping. Is this something "similar" to what you want to have, http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/cuecomponents_1991_46668172
This is from Cue Components!

I'm getting ready to build myself something similar. It will have a headstock at one end and a tailstock at the other with a downdraft box in the middle hooked up to a vacuum system or shop vac. I will use it for sanding, installing wraps and polishing.

Contact me for more info if interested.

Thanks all. Zim my e-mail is eccprocrete@yahoo.com. It's funny how we need to protect ourselves, but I take notice when it's my child. (I'm a little over 5-10 and he is 6-1) but he's still my baby. I will build something at my new shop. Any and all input is wanted. I have built a great spray booth that when I move in May. I will send pics to builders I see on here. It is a forced air room that I can spray with no mask,( I still use one but tried it to see) that has no smell while I'm working. I have took everything down to start moving. Thanks all, Lee D.
