They definitely ran the USPPA tournaments immediately before the pro events. I played in many of them.

Also, I don’t remember ANY events at the Peppermill as mentioned above. The USBTC was held at the Grand Sierra (formerly the Hilton).
This is correct the USPPA had events just before the pro event. I’m not sure when that ended. Maybe when gene stary passed away. But in the mid 80’s to mid 90’s USPPA was there with their handicap system.

Last one I went to was when SVB beat Archer in the final. He double dipped him.

Great memories and was a great tourney for many many years

Any chance the Reno Sands Regency 9-Ball Tournament will be brought back one day?
Probably not. The main driver of the Sands tournament was the huge amateur league event that preceded the pro event each year. That league -- the USPPA -- pretty much died with it's operator, Gene Stary.

And the men's pro tour doesn't exist any more. It controlled the pro event from about 1986 until it fell apart after the Camel thing.

Finally, the Sands event manager, Barbara Woodward, was a huge supporter of the event and I imagine she is gone now. A brief search shows that in 2008 she was involved with the Far West Open of the US Chess Federation.

I think the best chance for something like that to happen again would be for Diamond to have one of their (possible, proposed) multi-event jamborees, including a lot of amateur players.
